Used a memory foam mattress pad some years back, and I did not find it too warm. I found myself settling into it nicely. (haha) But also stated in the understanding I don't find a heated mattress pad, Hudson Bay blanket, and down comforter excessive warmth.

It's been twelve years and my mattress is doing my back in, time for a new one. I started looking online and am confounded by the myriad of options. Buying a mattress didn't used to be this difficult. There's an array of foam ones, some have cooling because foam can be hot. Then there's hybrid ones, foam and who knows what. Then at the bottom of the page there's the traditional type. They lead me to believe that they don't sell many of that type anymore. Prices are all over the place.

I'm told that memory foam can get really hot which I don't want. My current one is a firm S&F mattress with a topper built in. They say that firm is not good if you sleep on your side. It apparently prevents proper back alignment.


Has anyone found nirvana when it comes to a comfortable mattress?

Have been quite happy with a Tempur-Pedic for the past maybe 7 years. Even there, though, I recall they made several different flavors of them. Couldn't tell you which I've got.

Will look at Tempur-Pedic. I suppose that off-gassing doesn't matter for an old person, we're used to it.

We've had Tempur-Pedic for about 15 yrs. No problems with heat. It's the most comfortable bed we've had.

It will take a little while to break it in. The break in procedure is to walk around on it or a least for the model we have.

We have the Sleep Number mattress on all beds in the house. I hate them. It's like sleeping in an oven. I'd rather sleep on the couch than in one of those infernal things.

I didn't ever detect any, so whatever amount it does may just be odorless.

One thing to watch for is getting sheets that fit properly to whatever thickness of mattress you end up getting.

That's likely because they probably don't have $10,000 version...just a guess...

That's one thing I was really good at in Army basic. None of the other 7 guys in the room could bounce a quarter when done. Worked out great for me. I made their beds and arranged their foot lockers for inspections and they covered ALL of my other duties (like paste waxing the linoleum floors). I came out way ahead on the deal.

I should have mentioned above that the one thing I couldn't help them with was answering questions from the CO during inspection. It was SO hard not to laugh at some of the lunatic answers.

Oh man, I had to quit watching after they managed to get the dust cover on without hurting themselves. It took two of them to do a lame job in twice the time it usually took me to do an exemplary one when I was a slick-sleeved Army private. If I had walked away from my bunk and left it like they did I'd have found all the bedding on the floor when I came back from training.
