Did you mean 18 wheelers? I don't know of any RV trailers that came with CBs back then. Lucky if they came with an am radio!

I drove 18 wheelers for 23 years. S still have all(6?)of the CBs I bought over the years, from a bare bones P-S Alley Cat through a coupla "modified" SSB units, mostly P-S and Cobra. Also one base station(Hy-Gain Utopia)that had a lotta channels that, let's say, didn't come from the factory. The 'book of words' had a picture of the inside of the radio wiyh a spt shadow that was captioned "WARNING: do not cut this wire as it will cause the radio to transmit 40W, which is against FCC regulations". (It was already cut when I bought it off of a guy who got a Yaesu 401.) The fine tune was modified as a 'slider' so you could get between channels. If there was a nearby 'channel hog', I could go on a 1/2 channel and blank him/her out. Hee-hee!

Are you a ham? I have a Heathkit DX-100 and a HW-101 for my two transmitters.

I think they named the DX-100 for its weight in lbs:

Great tune with some really weird changes. I kinda prefer it as a ballad, but this is terrific. (wonder where you get bassoon pedals.)

Not so much for trucker talk but, pre cell phones, you could get traffic info and tell your wife when you would be home for dinner. A side benefit was, during skip, being able to talk to a friend in Australia.

A friend had put up a set of 'beams'. While he was waiting to get his radio back from being 'worked on', I took the Hy-Gain over to his house. We spun around the frequencies 'til we found someone chatting and asked how we sounded in Montana. "5 by 5" they replied. We were in South Miami.

I one tried my CB rig on the roof of a 30+ story building. I managed to talk to local people quite far away.

I have walkie talkies that I used on trails.

Marine VHF walkie talkies work well, too. Some have weather bands as well.
