I suppose in a certain lens, I am from LA. At least in that I called it home and (improbably) miss the place. Native? Not a chance. It seems to me I more miss the time than the place. My then-employer was Hearst, and by virtue of my job, held access to everywhere. Places the public will never see.
What landed me in LA from afar was Musician's Institute. What paid my rent was ... can't have a good day at the office without one of these. Decided if I know how to do something nobody else can do, or wants to do, my income is assured no matter what. A large number of no matter what's went down as I laid a path for my future ...
Did not see myself in the future on hands and knees on the floor examining cold type galleys one character at a time, or reading type in hexadecimal
... they say it's a living, we all got to eat. If the paper doesn't publish on my watch, I am looking for work in the morning ... is how it worked out. The paper always published on my watch 
What also worked out is keeping my bass all these years, for when I was ready again

My Leitz / Leica dealer was in Studio City.
Through that fisheye lens of time, it's a path I could have gone down and chose not to. But all of it became work-critical knowledge.
Retirement means here with you other GOFs is where I can grouse about that time with little guilt.

Mustang Sally reminds me of a band that I used to sit in with back in the 80's. I had a vocal duet on "It Takes Two" with the lead singer of this horn band that did Mustang Sally and did it right.
Last night I was at a club for a show and the break music included a modern version of "It Takes Two" and I don't know who was doing it but it was pretty good. Might have to resurrect that one and sing it with one of my bands. I think I can probably get a duet with those guys without having to beg too much.

When I choose to go out I see those kinds of cars all around here. Call me a GOF, but it looks really stupid.

FYI, the sax man is a friend of the band, not a regular. We have never rehearsed with him.
