Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

There are pumas in that crevasse.

Kind of easy to see who in my classroom lives in a broken household. And classmates who died ... one by his own hand before he was 13 ... the girl struck by a car on her way to the store to buy milk for breakfast ... Children who live in poverty ....

Now boarding school is a completely different experience. Never saw, nor heard of, any corporal punishment there. There are few secrets in a school of 168.

My first elementary school (grades 1-4; 1957-1961) principal had and used one. My father loved the idea and bought a similar item that was branded "Board of Education". He thought that was hilarious. He used it regularly on us (myself and my 2 younger brothers; my sisters were too young) until he caught my brother Mark trying to saw the handle off of it. Beat him until the handle splintered off. The a$$wipe was a preacher, no less (Prussian Lutheran). The last time he whipped me, he broke his favorite leather belt on me. Changed my last name as soon as I could and avoided any contact with him as much as possible during my adult life. Missed my mother's funeral because he was still breathing. Didn't like him. Didn't love him. Didn't respect him. Really lousy way to grow up. Don't miss him one bit.

I hope each and every one of you had a more loving upbringing.
I got an occasional good whacking but nothing at your level and never when I did not deserve it. Glad to see you survived it all.

Does the paddle change that part who wants to do that particular thing? Kind of Clockwork Orange stuff there.

I'd have to disagree with you on the Orange thing. Let's just say for myself and most others, it got your attention especially since you could hear the echo in the building. The lickings were pretty rare overall. I only had two in those two years.

Wonder what part of us needs a licking to be corrected. And corrected is a loaded word! I really don't have an answer. What I have is a bass or two and I know never to point it at anyone.

I was beaten at school and at home. It stopped when I had the strength to grab their arm and stop them. Bullies back down quickly when they know that they can’t hurt you.

I put up with some bullying in middle school. I should have knocked the crap out of them and it probably would have stopped but the end result would have been a piece of wood delivered by the principal.

My dad applied leather to my backside a few times but I never felt like he was mad or out of control. I can't remember any specific incidents but looking back, I'm pretty sure I deserved it. My mom apologized to me for the whippings when I was in my 50s. I told her I probably deserved more than I got!

Black blocks? They always looked like they were painted on with a stencil to me...at least from a short distance.
I have been researching the MIJ Geddy Lee. The first year or two were actual blocks but the neck was so thin they'd crack and misbehave. Then they called them markers. Seems like some kind of plastic film or maybe paint. I want to take the mods off my MIA Geddy and put it back stock, and mod another Jazz.

I want a Japanese made black Jazz with black block inlays and binding.

I have black binding on my Rick, it doesn’t help with the playing one bit. The triangular inlays do allow notes to slip off the neck with ease.

Oh well, no black binding below. I think that you want what is called a black-on-black jazz. This one is kind of rough.

I was a good kid. All I ever did was ask him who he was talking to when he prayed. Instead of answering me, I'd get a whipping. Never figured it out. Born a-theist. Still an atheist. Never have believed in invisible men. Praying to them seemed really stupid to me. Too damn smart for my own good. He'd preach one thing (love your neighbor), and behave differently (only love neighbors EXACTLY like you; all the rest were beneath dignity). The fact that I preferred the company of black people (in the south) to his really p'd him off. I just liked being around peeps who were genuine (not that I knew that word when I was a kiddo) and genuinely cared about others. My father was the biggest hypocrite I've ever met...and I've met a LOT of them.

Note that I don't hold peoples' beliefs against them...as long as they practice what they preach. There are many wonderful Christians and Jews and Muslims and Buddhists and followers of Confucius and many other beliefs.

I don't care who anyone sleeps with. I don't care about anyone's ethnicity (not one person on this planet got to chose their parents). I don't care about anyone's chosen or assumed (taught) moral code.

There are good peeps (how they behave toward others). And then there's everyone else.

Having to do with absolutely nothing (a GOF specialty)

When Shakespeare writes about characters who long for stewed prunes, that's not precisely what he's suggesting. Once believed to prevent the pox, stewed prunes were served for patrons at the seamstress' guild
<wink wink nudge nudge>
A man who says he's going out to eat stewed prunes is a man with a single priority ....

Too dense. Don’t get it.
