That "age" guy is creating a hostile work environment. Report him to HR. It could also be part of discrimination and elder abuse.
Oh, yes, as silly as it may seem, write down the dates and times in a notebook while it's fresh on you mind. HR tends to take notes as gospel. Do that now, even without any intention of retaliation. Start with past memories... this guy started inquiring about my age about...

In many large companies IT support is farmed out to consulting companies that work on site and have help desk people in India. There are tax advantages to hiring consultants even thought they are paying them way more than the employees in the company that lost their jobs. I’ve seen it happen time and time again.

Same thing happens with the mailroom, cleaners, maintenance, cafetaria and other support workers.

The government hires a lot of consultants to do engineering R&D. Consultants submit bids on proposed projects. These consultants have to meet security requirements and be capable of obtaining required clearances levels. One reason why some people are required to maintain a low public social media profile.

A subtle form of racism comes to mind. Subtle if you are not the victim!

Oh I get that mate, I've got enough cynicism to share if anyones feeling a lack.

The point was that Will won't know if he doesn't confront it and lets it ride. If he lets it ride it'll be an unnessesary tension underlying his work and sour what time he has left.

Clarifying his position should expose any shady reasons for the enquiries and appropriate action can then be taken.

Maurie.

I don't disagree, sir, but I think give it a week would be wise.

ALB when does your real boss return?

He’s back tomorrow. As I said earlier, he’s cool with me. Make no mistake GOF’s. Discrimination is alive and well both in the workplace and society. Are we treated the same as if we were 40? We know the answer to that.

Sorry if you have said so... but is this public or private sector?
I work in City Government, union member with a crap load of lawyers  who love to take on organizations that pick on their union members. Really, the more I think about it, I've blown this up much more than I should. I think all will be well. I just get paranoid. I had planned on paying off my new car and have at least 3 more years to do that. And the next three years the union is getting us raises, much needed. In PERS the highest three years is what they base your pension on. I'm doing pretty good but three or three and a half more years and I'll be in even better shape.

After I was injured at work (ten years ago) and awaiting settlement, my employer sent out an early retirement package to all employees over the age of 55.

The last sentence in the cover letter was that if early retirement was not taken you would be subject to layoff.

Legal age discrimination.

Epilogue: I kind of lucked out. In addition to a financial settlement and SS disabilty, I was able to take their retirement package.

But I definitely would have preferred to be healthy and working. I liked my job and was well paid.

Late popping in, but I’m with agedhorse: “let it ride” I also feel that Bad Example is right on by suggesting that you document it. Just a brief handwritten note, dated, could be used as evidence if you ever have to use it.

As an aside, my son is a 34 year old web developer that works at a very successful tech firm with about 100 employees. He is considered to be a “senior” in the company. He tells me that “older” guys like him are highly respected and sought after in his business because of the knowledge bank they have.

What blows me away is that at 34, he’s considered to be a senior.

As an older engineer realizing that I was going to need a job post Fender was quite unsettling but it turned out the being older and having lots of experience, institutional memory of the industry and avoiding errors that have been made before turned out to be highly desirable. Whew ;)

Andy, I’m really, really glad you landed on your feet in this one. :)

I went through something similar when the Province split our electricity generating system up and sold parts off. Sadly, in my case, the stress and uncertainty caused a breakdown and I could no longer work. After a legal fight things were settled. Now I’m retired I have a pension but not as much as I would have had if I’d been allowed to work through to 65.

Imagine where we would be in gear had Andy given up on his design career?

I thought I would have had to go on to be a Walmart greeter years before now, but someone has been watching over me... I've been very fortunate to spend very little time without a steady income. Sometimes small, but always enough to get by.
I have memorized the words of Jeff Dunham's Walter:"Welcome to Wal-Mart. Get yer (stuff) and get out". Just in case:smug:
