Without a doubt Nathan is a talent. Does he just have better PR people that gets him out there?

I’ve seen many amazing players that can go toe-to-toe with the best. Not only can they play but they can write. Nobody will ever hear of them. That’s the lot of most talented musicians.

At the same time, I wonder about people with superhuman musical abilities where everything comes easy to them. What is the challenge for them if they don’t have to work as hard as most. Many do their best work when they are younger. They put out a lot of material, make a lot of money, then their creative output becomes lackluster and they cruse through the rest of their life.

They say that you do your best work when you’re hungry. Are they just being lazy later in life or is their ability to write good songs exhausted.

Very clear here of never working for anyone whose business model is based on keeping people off balance. I ain't one to play at a rigged game. We know there isn't an earthquake powerful enough to knock over those milk bottles at the carnival concourse. Actually that kind of thing tees me off. Against all better judgement [uh oh incoming story] one night in Oakland I came across some entrepreneurs practicing three card monte. Unarmed, and alone, and in Oakland, teed off enough to call their game down: nice game there, where did you learn that, prison? and the crowd dispersed and I'm still here to tell the tale.

Edit: funny thing then, at no point was I ever in fear in that exchange. I watched their entire game fold.

New incoming story, same deal ... it's my first day of econ at grad school and take the El downtown. Folks roll into the car working the three shell game. From my seat I scope the entire thing out. Who's the lookout. Who are the plants. &c. As I see the entire picture unfold I notice there is a man observing me figuring out the game. We lock eyes and there is a moment of mutual acknowledgement. As I roll into my classroom, I see that guy on the El who observed me observing is another journalism student.

That's print journalism, speaking of dinosaurs.

So , yesterday at around 7 am , I was working in a townhouse and was ready to start testing out the water system. I went outside to the meter vault and put a pair of small channel locks on the valve and tried to give it a turn. It didn't want to move so in typical plumber fashion , I applied more force. The pliers slipped and I banged my right thumb against the side of the concrete vault. Removed a piece of skin about the size of a fingernail. No big deal there but it also hurt like hell. Oh well , tough it out and go back to work. Went and got the "curb key" and got the valve turned on. As the day progressed , the thumb swelled and stiffened up and by noon it hurt so bad I couldn't do anything with it. No problem , the house was finished and ready to test. A quick check of the house revealed that two sprinkler heads were blown so I couldn't turn on the water without flooding the house. I looked at my thumb and realized that the injury was all for nothing. Went to fill out the time sheets and paperwork for the house and by this time I couldn't even hold a pencil. Off to the docs for an X-ray. Two and a half hours in the urgent care revealed nothing broken just a bad sprain and some serious bruising. The first good news of the day. A note from the doc and some paperwork (had to get a nurse to fill it out as I still couldn't hold a pencil) and I have earned a couple days off at the expense of workmans comp. Fortunately , no gigs this weekend and I don't play with my thumb anyway. Aleve and ice packs are my best friends today. I should be more careful in the future. Yeah , right.
Ouch. Glad you didn't have a gig this weekend so you can take care of yourself and heal!

I officially entered a new era of GOF'dom yesterday with my 60th anniversary around the sun. I do not know how this happened. By all rights, a reckless child like me should have shuffled off this mortal coil long ago. Yet, I am still here.

I do not like that I am growing old and have always said that I'll go down kicking and screaming. This appears to be true. But I do like that I can challenge everything people think they know about aging by dressing funny, wearing my hair in blue pigtails, and generally behaving as age-inappropriately as I want to.

Not sure how many more trips around the sun I'll get, so I might as well yuck it up for maximum effect while I still can.

And now, in other GOF news, I have the need to lose 20 lbs and, apparently, get GERD under control again. So diet is going to be a thing now. Been waking up in the middle of the night choking, with a killer sore throat, and finally realized that it's most likely acid reflux giving me a whole new set of symptoms. I was diagnosed a few years ago with something called Barrett's esophagus, a nasty little pre-cancerous thing that happens due to GERD and was taking medications for that which were later found to increase the odds of dementia. Since dementia is in my immediate family, I stopped that medication once I learned that my pre-cancerous condition had cleared up, but it looks like I'm going to have to start that again, if I want to sleep and breathe at the same time :( .

Getting old is not for wimps. I choose my battles carefully, but I know that, in the end, it's a war that won't be won.

Happy belated birthday. Yesterday was also my granddaughter's 10th birthday. So, the two of you have that in common.

Good luck on your health issues.

All the best on your recent birthday.

I knew people from Germany that were called Gerd. A common name, short for Gerhard.

Diets are always difficult. There are always lots of options. Eating a healthy balanced diet, protein in the morning, nothing after 8PM has helped me.
