We went out to see a band that ia touted as the best in Liverpool. A trio fronted by a guy named Kappa, it had two loverly ladies on drums and bass. The bass player was using a Ric through a Rumble. I was yet again impressed by how good the amp sounded. They finished a bit after eleven and had roadies to carry the stuff out. By 12 we were all ushered out the door and the night was done. It was all kinda civilised!

I'm sure if you could find a keyboard player willing to learn signature parts and play sampled patches like that, it would add a lot of versatility, but I find it impossible to find players like that nowadays. All the keyboard players I've auditioned just want to read charts and play chords and solos over charted changes. They don't want to learn anything.

Yep, but I'm pretty happy just to even find anyone who is a good reader and soloist these days. The sextet I used to sub in had a really tough time with that, which was a real shame. It was all first chair guys from the long standing community big band, and went over really well for upscale geezer events like the 50th anniversary party I played with them at the toniest local hotel's ballroom.

BTW, funk still sells well out here. Quite a few rooms in Portland have B3s and 6-7 piece bands are fairly common in medium sized clubs.

Those are all year, pollen's seasonal-in theory. With our mild weather, there's almost always something blooming. Particularly, idiots.

That's the thing; the ones I can find can't even read. They might have some good solo chops, which goes a long way, but they just want chord charts. That works great if you're playing blues but not on Steely Dan covers.
