When the Monkees were cast, Mickey couldn’t play the drums, Davey could shake a tambourine and his butt. They acted like americas answer to the Beatles. When the Monkees decided to play live to prove to the press that they could play, Jimi Hendrix opened for them. He got booed because the teeny boppers wanted the Monkees.

That's the problem with a lot of that stuff, especially the stuff that's keys heavy. Much of it did not hold up over time. But we still get nostalgic for it

Good-hearted kid with no prospects. Starts stealing to support his widowed disabled mom, arrested by Andy, judge gives him the choice of prison or the Marines.

Option 1. Takes Marines. KIA. Mom dies of broken heart. Andy lapses into depression. Drinks himself to death.
Option 2. Takes Marines. Becomes hero, comes home, takes over as Andy's replacement.
Option 3. Takes prison, shanked within a week. Mom assassinates Andy and judge.
Option 4. Takes prison, comes out smart and tough. Becomes county crime boss, provides for mom, co-opts judge...killed in shootout with Andy.

And proceeded to download several complete shows I attended. Some hold up pretty well, but the vast majority get one listen at best. Jan Hammer, Chick Corea, I'm looking at you.

I think I'm fortunate that some of my very favorite shows never got recorded. My filters are just calibrated so differently these days, especially for classic rock stuff.

I think the stuff that holds up well tends to use the more traditional sounds. I listen to Jeff Beck's music quite a bit; Blow by Blow is a perennial favorite, and the Fender Rhodes his keyboard player uses on that stuff just never gets old. By contrast, the heavy, pipe organs and synths in a lot of the old ELP stuff make me want to run screaming from the room.

Very funny, though, I was listening to this track earlier today from a recent release. There's a synth solo in it about 6:30 in which just sounds like it had to be there. So much of what's old is new again, but you have to do it right.

Yep. Jeff Beck's band actually played at a local country club right around when Wired was current. Hammer respected many of the BBB voicings, of of course the synthy stuff was more or less new and fresh back then and we mostly loved it. The venue was surreal, just like a stage out on the 18th fairway or whatever, and they would even let you use the tennis courts and pool IIRC. And they just had the regular clubhouse bar open with Heineken at whatever they charged day to day. None of that lasted past a couple of shows though, naturally.

Modular synths are a big thing these days. I might just dive into that market in one way or another, I can think of worse ways to make a buck and keep my hand in the music game. And the roots run deep for me, all the way back to the ARP factory ca. 1977 on the tech side, and a decade earlier as an avid listener.
