getting more mic inputs on a digi 002?

Hey, so currently I have a presonus firepod (8 mic pres with 1/4" outputs) and I'm planning on getting a digi 002 rack pretty soon. I was wondering if it would make sense to use these mic pres and send them through 1/4" into the digi rack or if there's another way that would be better.

you should add them to the digi 002 rack as extra pres, giving you more channels, as the002 pres are actually pretty good by themselves

You can add 10 more inputs to the 002's... 8 via the ADAT lightpipe (TOSLINK), and 2 via the S/PDIF inputs. Be aware that the maximum sample rate you can record with all 18 channels is 48k.

From what I've seen the firepod does not have ADAT, therefore, you can't use all 8 of its channels to expand the inputs on your 002R as the 002R does not support channel expansion using firewire. You could expand 2 channels using the firepod's S/PDIF output.

Sending the firepod through the 002R 1/4" would work but is not exactly desireable either since you will be doing 2 A/D and D/A conversions on those channels which will likely decrease the quality of your tracks somewhat.

I know my guitarist used the digi 002 and we run some of the mics through a little berhinger mixer, mainly guitar and bass. since Im not getting a strong enough signal out of my berhringer pre amp, that way we can boost the signal a little. and we a re running a firewire and still get atleast 16 tracks which is the most we will need for what we are doing now. with just recording for stuff for our drummer to practice off of. And when we go to record for full quality we will record everyone in seperate room and run headphones. no bleed

- The Mackie ONYX 800R is very good bang for the $$$. Nice features decent headroom, and pretty transparent sounding.

- Focusrite Octopre. Seems to be one of the more popular budget options.

- MOTU 8-pre looks decent. Never used one though.

- Audient ASP008. I went with this one. Fantasticly clean and transparent pre. It was between this and the ONYX 800R for me.

There are a few more options out there that I can't think of off the top of my head at the moment.

Oh yeah... the Presonus DigiMax... knew I forgot one. There are a few different versions of it. I believe the FS version is the one people seem to prefer... they apparently have different (nicer/cleaner) pres.
