I tried the treble bleed mod on one of my P-basses, and I decided that actually prefer the way the high end rolls off when reducing the volume control.
For your situation, although I haven't specifically done this with a P-bass, I've used both an Aguilar Tone Hammer and a Radial Bassbone to kick in some extra juice for solos, adding some high end and mids as well as a volume boost. I didn't buy them for that purpose, I just happened to have both on hand.
Part of it also is that the other players have an awareness of carving out some sonic space for you when you're soloing - they don't have to drop out a la the old jazz m.o., but just not approaching it the same way as a blazing guitar solo.
Check out some clips of Nick Campbell soloing, if you can find any - he often plays a P-bass and he has no problem making his presence felt.
