Thanks - it's kind of funny - the Melody Maker (a '68 I believe) is the budget model, while the Triumph is the deluxe! But they are both short scale, both have the "evertilt" bridge, both made of mahogany, both set-neck, so they are cousins...

I love my RD Standard.

The bass that actually convinced me I had to have a set-neck, strings-through-body, heavy-as-**** Gibson, though, was a Gibson Explorer Bass that an ex-roommate owned. I never even played it plugged in, but it just felt great to play. You could feel each note ringing for days.

I like the Rippers/Grabbers a lot too, and hope to pick one up eventually.

I've never really been drawn to the EB series, though I haven't played them extensively. Just based on seeing them in action I feel like they're generally muddier and less well-defined than I prefer.

I would love to have a real Gibson bass, be it a Ripper,Les Paul ,Grabber, Thunderbird or any of the EB series. I have a Epi Thunderbird and a Epi EB-3 and both are a ton of fun. Although I mainly play Fenders I would not pass up a chance at owning a Gibson.

Played a SG/EB-3 (whatever you want to call it) the other day through a Markbass 2x10 combo and then through a Ampeg SVT and a Ampeg 8x10 cab.


Loved it through both. Now, I need to find someone who will trade me their SG bass for my SX. Any takers? I throw in 2 half blown up Peavey Speakers and some dead strings

The Kalamazoo looks very similar and uses some of the same parts, but the necks are different - different headstock and the Kalamazoos are bolt-on while the Melody Maker is set-neck.
