Gibson Basses - Now Even More Disappointing?

The ones I've tried have been great. Maybe I'm just lucky. The faded SG I played impressed me enough that I'm thinking about getting one myself. Light, low action, tone that sounds good to my ears, seemed to be well made etc. Go figure.

used to be obcest with the vintage gibson line, i still love the rd and rippers. tried a thunderbird a few years back and i actually liked it alot better than my old epi. also tried one of those sg basses too. no thanks.

1. Go to NAMM. Gibson and Fender are always right above each other in the ballrooms. At gibson it's jowly, paunchy guys in blue suits and the booth is closed to anyone who is not an authorized dealer. Now remember, I'm not some dreamy eyed kid on a guest badge from a music store; I'm a 50 something guy whose business has been a NAMM member for 24 years. I wear a buyers badge and the booth is still closed to me.

Down one flight and Fenders doors are wide open. Factory guys and indie reps are in Bowling and Hawaiian shirts. I ask one of them, "Is this the Eric Johnson Strat?" He says, "Yeah, it is, why don't you try it." Before I can answer it's off the wall and plugged into a custom shop tube amp. Year after year I see it. Fender's corporate philosophy is "Hey, it's Rock and Roll! We can make money and still have fun." Gibson, "Excuse me sir, are you an authorized dealer

+1

This was my experience the time I was able to attend NAMM as a guest of my old boss, the bassist of a certain world-famous rockabilly ensemble. I'll refrain from namedropping.

I'm sure it has been presented in a more eloquent fashion before but I think that, over the years Gibson's focus went from serving average musicians in the trenches to lawyers, doctors and retirees sitting on fat stacks of cash.

What I'm saying is we should kill all lawyers, doctors and retirees.

I'm closing this. Even though it started off as being about a specific bass, it's branched into all things Gibson (with its detractors and defenders) with some politics thrown in.
