GIBSON Club. Part II

Hi All,
after a lifetime as a Fender fan I am considering buying a Gibson SG.
I only had a chance to try an Epiphone EB-0 and when playing standing I noticed the bass body was leaning out due to the neck strap button position.
So how do most Gibson owners deal with this "body lean-out dive"?
Are their any suggestions/solutions to have this bass properly set in terms of ergonomics?
Also how does avarege weight compare to Fender basses? I guess mahogany body and neck are heavier than alder body and maple neck.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Isn't your picking arm touching the body enough to keep it from leaning out while you're playing? I've only ever noticed that problem when I wasn't playing, such as if I reached out with my right arm and leaned forward.

In my experience, SG basses are lighter than Fender Precisions or Jazzes because the body is smaller and the neck is shorter. This more than compensates for mahogany being, generally speaking, heavier than alder.

Personally, I don't much like the Epiphone EB-0. The ones I've played have not felt or sounded quite right, and the fretwork wasn't all that great. The bolt-on neck is just wrong. See if you can try a Gibson.

I have a Gibson EB-3 and use 3" or 4" thick cotton neck straps with it and don't even notice the neck dive anymore.

Recently picked up this 2007 Money bass and I’m happy with the tone but holy s**t is this thing loud. I have an MXR Bass Compressor at the start of my board which on all my other basses gets kissed gently as I dig in, but the money is pegged at -12dB from the first note.
I might look at swapping out the bridge as the plastic saddles worry me, and start using a volume pot on something other than 0 or 10...

I posted this as a NBD on August 22, but not here...so here she is!

'78 Gibson RD Standard in ebony

42 year old bass...
11 lbs.
Neck: maple, ebony fretboard
Body: perfectly balanced asymmetrical design of solid maple
Pickups: 2 passive series IV humbuckers.

Put on a new set of TI jazz flats (XL since through-body), three new pots (neck volume, bridge volume, master tone), and a new jack!

So much better than the old Artist series and it's temperamental Moog circuit, or even the 2018 Artist series with it's wonky active / passive electronics. (I've never tried the Krist Novoselic Signature w/ it's two Seymour Duncan "Hot Stack" pickups because I can't find one for sale in the United States)

Two months later, and I'm loving this thing. Just feels natural hanging on my shoulder, and sounds great. I picked up a couple of my short-scale basses today, and my Epi Jack Casady...and went right back to the RD.

Can somebody share their experience with the EB5? Especially interested in the B string and overall performance.

Would I be able to get more modern tones from it, contrasting my TB?

B String on mine is good. Not 35" scale Zon good. It's good enough that I don't find myself thinking about it. no floppiness here.

The stock tone is pretty beefy. I liked but found limiting. I think dropping a preamp in would get you a more modern tone and versatility.

I am already #122 of this venerable club and have gone through a number of Gibson over the years. As of 2 weeks ago I am back in the fold.

Though I've wanted one for many years, there was always something else in the queue. Then this one showed up and the timing was right. Here is my "new" 1987 Gibson IV in outstanding condition.

One piece Mahogany body, one piece mahogany set neck with ebony FB, Schaller hardware and the introduction of the Thunderbird TB+ pickups. This was another attempt to make inroads into P bass territory. Though the bass had hopes for a new look starting with the headstock, Henry put the kabosh on it and said they had to go after the P. They even put in a P neck profile so P players could just grab it and go.This generic shape was the result. Thanks Henry....

Having said that, it is very well done. It plays very evenly, excellent sustain and those pickups are the bomb. What it amounts to is a P shaped Thundebird. I am very glad I grabbed this. A wonderful bass from Gibson's "Hey, let's try this..." Pile.;)

#345 checking back in... and making the first Gibson Bass Thread post for '21. :bassist:

I've had my '87 Q-80 bass loaned out to the son of our banjo player. The youngster is a very gifted musician... can play about anything he picks up and wanted to give bass guitar a shot. I had just strung it up with some new D'Addario NYXL's and set it up, so off it went to inspire another generation. The boy's stepfather gave him a new Peavey 5-string for Christmas and my Gibson Q-80 came home last week, with a new set of strings and a new PigHog cable in the case pocket with a nice note. :)

(Yeah, you probably shouldn't make a habit of loaning out your stuff, but the kid's Ol' Man and me go back about thirty years onstage, and it's not like I'm hurtin' for a bass to play... besides that, now I've got a sub when I need one!)

Anyways, I've got her all cleaned up, restrung, took some pictures, :snaphappy:... and planning on playing some tunes today. :bassist:
