Greetings,

This seems like an appropriate place for my first TB post.

Here's my new pride and joy:

I hope I don't get run out on a rail for the new pickups, but the Dark Stars are simply awesome in this thing.

MY suggestion would be to replace both pickups with Dark Stars, You'll be real happy with your tone. Also there's another SG player in this thread, that has Dark Stars in his SG. They look good & most of all, I'd be willing to bet, it probably has a really great tone.

Question: How does the Dark Star compare in size to the neck 'bucker on an EB-series? I've got an evil plan to DS an Epi EB-3, and I'd like to know how much work it would require to put one in there. Thanks for your help.

The Dark Star is close in size to the neck 'bucker that came in my SG, but I'm pretty sure that the guy who did the routing said he needed to do a little work to make it fit. I avoided a lot of work because the natural top doesn't have a pickguard. My understanding is that there's a bit of cutting involved there.

There used to be pages and pages of pix of Dark Starred basses, with various GIbson models well-represented, at the Dude Pit Dark Star forum, but it seems most of them have been lost in platform moves.

The easiest thing would be to email Fred and ask him. It seems like he's got photos of most of the basses he's built Dark Stars for and he's very helpful. When you order the Dark Star, Fred sends you a routing diagram that lays out all the dimensions and he could probably tell you exactly what would be involved.

One thing I can say for sure: you won't regret putting in the Dark Star. They are fantastic.

Oh, my! That is awesome!!! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Thanks! We're still very much in the honeymoon phase. Of course I've been playing a lot but I also spend a fair amount of time sitting and staring at it.

Since I took those pix I've flipped the bridge PUP so that the polepieces are toward the neck. That rounded off the sound of that one a bit and I like it even better.

Thank you for my number and your kind words. I've read elsewhere about the Hipshot replacement. Can you tell me your thoughts about what improvements I would see from that?
hoby

AFAIK the Hipshot replacement is of better engineering. You'll get a breeze-like adjustability. Besides, I personally don't like the idea of 3-point "floating" bridge the Gibson uses. I've seen some EB-s with messed-up bridges. The replacement process is easy. Maybe you may want to give it a try ;)
