Hi All,
I've been swamped and unable to keep up with the Gibson club as I should. Serge (vates) has volunteered to take over for me as Club president and number assignor. So, I am granting him that position with my blessings. I'll try to check in from time to time to see how things are going.

This post will be updated.

Let us all make our Club flourish! :hyper:
So from now on - no pics=no bass ;) (a common rule here)

My Gibson family will be complete when my "Fenderbird" is finished by Mike Lull soon. Here's the Bicentennial-soon-to-be-Fenderbird with truss-rod-obliterated neck:

and here's my favorite Thunderbird:

I also picked up a Studio 5, Blue Money Bass and SG Supreme on Ebay in the last year. All were screaming deals and I can't believe I spent so much time looking at other basses over the years. Gibson's build-quality has been superior in my experience.

Good to see a Gibson club in here. Hit me with a number please!

I have always been mainly a Fender guy (or Hamer), but there have been a few Gibson guitar and bass models that I always liked. So I have 2 Gibson basses, a '78 RD Artist Bass in sunburst and a '87 Q-80 Bass. They even get frequent play (though my Fenders are my main basses).

Fenders are excellent basses---but I sold mine when I bought my RD Artist CMT. The RD sounded as good or better and had more sound versatility. But it is a hell of a lot heavier---oh well...

I only just noticed this thread. Cool though.

This is my 1972 EB4-L, I bought it from somebody in the US over ebay for what I thought wasn't a lot of money. The original pickup had been swapped for one from an EB0 for some reason, but I changed it again for a DiMarzio model one, and the 2 post bridge had tilted over because of the string tension (a common problem I believe) so I put a Badass II which I already had on it. It's also got an Aguilar OBP-2 pre amp in it, which is actually a bit much with that pickup, I have to keep the volume control down a little or it distorts at the input of my EBS compressor. It also had to be completely re-fretted, clearly somebody had tried to do it themselves and made a very bad job of it. I took it to a luthier I know and he said it was the worst fret job he'd ever seen. fortunately he's very good and now it's perfect.

It neck dives like crazy and I hate playing it standing up, but I love it all the same and now I'm thinking about getting another Gibson.

The Fenders are lightweight compared to the RD. But it is the 34.5" that makes it a bit difficult for me to play faster stuff on it. Great bass for ballad stuff due to the long sustain. I like the treble on this bass too. I have the guitar model of the RD Artist too (I am 50/50 guitar/bass player) which I sometimes use as a Telecaster substitute. But I like the Q-80 even better than the RD Artist. The Q-80 is my only passive bass. I like that body shape (but I like the RD shape too), the weight is okay too, big headstock though. The pickups aren't that bad as others say, they are the same that can be found on the SB series, Grabber and Explorer basses, but those were all maple basses, this one has a mahagony body that gives it a nice midrange. Not exactly a bass I'd expect from a Custom Shop, but still a nice sound and playability. I bought it in 1996 for $300.

Here's my entry into the club. My first Gibson, ever and I've been playing since the 60's (had a Les Paul 6 string once for a couple of months in the 70's). Its a 77 Ripper fretless that hasn't been out of the case for 10 years. Smells funny and there is definitely some rash on the ebony fretboard.

It's in the shop now for a setup and leveling assessment.

The jack input through the plastic pickguard seems like a design flaw as it is largely unsupported and vulnerable to tugs and bangs.

Haven't had too much time to work with the chicken head switch yet but those humbuckers are nice p/u's. Plan to use it with a straight ahead jazz group.

I own three Gibson basses, that I really love , & wouldn't sell for anything. I've got an 05 White Thunderbird , an 05 Honey-burst Les Paul Standard { heavy as hell }, and an 07 Les Paul Faded Brown Flat Top { nice & lite } . Great basses, lots of bottom end, good mids, and clean highs, once their dialed in . The only bad thing , I have to say about Gibson , is there QC department needs a lot of work , but they are starting to get better. Other than that, they make a great instrument.

"WHERE DID YOU GET THE PURPLE BIRD

i've never seen one in that color before, is it a refin?

come to think of it, i've never seen most of those colors on a thunderbird. "

Sorry, I didn't see this sooner!
The white one was a stock '89, since the pic its been completly retro-fitted with chrome pickups and hardware. The black one is a stock '77, my main stage bass. The purple and green were total wrecks when I bought them, missing pickups needing new frets and a bridge! They were both rebuilt and custom painted by noted Seattle area bass maker Mike Lull. On the end is a 2001 in natural mahogany, I've since replaced this bass with a '77 Greco Thunderbird II, a very high quality japanese copy of a single pick up '63 Gibson. In my band I have to play something that stands out, only a Thunderbird will do ;)
