I had a black Gibson RD Standard for years. I actually sold it to a friend, then traded some tools to get it back. But alas, I got laid off and thought I needed the money more than the bass, since I was hardly playing at that time. Sold it to a little music store in Clarence, New York(near Buffalo) called Main Music. Tried to go back later to see if he still had it, but it went the way of eBay to someone in Sweden(I think that is what he said). Anyway, it was heavy as a bus, but I still really, really wish I had it nowIf this bass is in the arsenal of anyone on TB, it would be cool to see it again!!

I've done these before, but here they are again.

As do you my friend! I just need to find its brother the Ripper so I can complete the set . I love the wine color though. That's quite a rare one from what I hear.

Pictured l to r: '75 Ripper-modified fretless, '78 Grabber, and '74 Ripper.

The '75 Rip is alder and my favorite fretless. The Grabber is fairly heavy but very lively. The '74 Rip is a Frankenstein pieced together with parts from another '74.

Newly acquired: a cherryburst '74 Ripper...another "player" project bass that I intend restore to original specs.

No, it was originally a fretted bass. A previous owner had installed the fretless ebony board w/fret markers. It's a beautiful piece of wood and whoever did the work did a great job.

Since the truss rod cover was missing when I bought it, I replaced it with one of the later style two-ply covers and, with some help, made a new 5 ply pick guard to match.

Here are some pics of my new 'Bird, I ordered it back in mid - August, I guess I've had it about three weeks now. It sounds quite different from a standard 'Bird, very thumpy, tighter and darker, I think the Maple wings and modified wiring have a lot to do with that...........
