In terms of the metal, I spoke to the chrome experts at my local motorbike garage - and we agreed on T-Cut metal polish; but Brasso or Silvo would work as well (provided they're not just UK brands).

After that it was simply a case of stripping everything down to components and getting them polished. Wire wool is great for scrubbing stubborn bits.

The chrome parts do dull over time - there are a lot of us here with 30 year+ basses and you can see it in some pictures. Totally up to you. I felt mine was dirty rather than aged so I went out to get it shining again.

Paint I' more wary of. It's thin and old, and every Grabber of the same vintage I've seen has started to lose it around the through-body stringing. I lemon oil the neck often both fretboard and rear, as the rear of the neck originally looked like it was going bad - like a banana skin - and some TLC was needed. I just use the excess lemon oil on my clothto wet the body, removing any marks before polishing up with a soft dry cloth.

Helpful?

I suppose it's a debate between leaving the patina, and shining things up.

Most of me says leave it.

Depends on your starting point, I suspect. I don't think I could have left this one without risking a real turn to corrosion.

Lovely Victory. I've always quite fanced a Victory Artist, but suspect the weight will put me off in the end - managed to slip a disc at the end of last year.

One thing which really surprised me about the Grabber was the absence of any real weight - very light bass, I thought.

Hey, Jirishman, how do you like that Hipshot bridge on that purdy white one you got there? I've been thinking about building a gibson-inspired bass in lutherie class and this bridge is one of my options. It looks beefy, is that an accurate assumption??

You weren't asking me directly, but I've got two of those hipshot 3 point replacement bridges.

It's an obvious winner over the original.
You gain individual string height adjustment, and side to side string spacing adjustment.
Not only that, it's built very well and is a drop in replacement. Hipshot is an awesome company with great customer service.

I absolutely love the Hipshot bridge. Beefy is a good way to describe it. Its a far more substantial piece of metal compared to the 3pt bridge. This obviously helps with the balance of the Tbird, it doesn't feel nearly as neck heavy.
Its very comfortable for palm muting too- every edge is rounded and polished. But best of all, its incredibly easy to adjust the intonation and action. I think I'll put a Hipshot on just about any Gibson I am lucky enough to own in the future.
