I've been tempted by the zebra TB. I didn't like the look at first but yours is a really fine looking bass! How do you like its sound/tone?

Thanks for the comment. When I first saw that 'bird it I wasn't really too keen on it, but the more I checked it out, the more the looks grew on me. The stripe in the grain is really nice and consistent on this one, and the color matches pretty close to the mahogany - though this is not the case with all of the zebra 'birds out there.

As for the sound - I love it! The tone is a little darker than a stock TB - but it's also very clear and piano-like in character. It cuts through the mix very well, and speaks with authority when driving my Ampeg. I'll try and get some samples up in the next week so you can judge for yourself.

I'm looking forward to hearing that!

Add me!

My first "name" bass was a cherry '68 EB-0 modified with a treble DeArmond bridge pup to make it a bastard EB-3. Also had the frets yanked out of it filled with wood putty. My parents got it for me in '71 when I was in high school because it looked like I was actually interested in something public school had to offer - Stage Band and Jazz Choir.

This axe was stolen at a New Years party when I took a brief "nap". Dumb kid. Got it back in pieces and it was too damaged to repair. I played in my first cover bands with this bass.

In '77 I bought a brand new fretless Ripper, black/black with unlined ebony finger board. Shipped from Kalamazoo - only new bass I've ever purchased. I still play this bass everyday and use it for jazz gigs mostly. Has a couple of dings and have worn through the finish on the back of the neck. LOVE the sound of this thing! It just sings!

Gibsons don't get their due at all. I remember walking into a studio in the 70s with the EB3 and the engineer sez "Don't you have a Fender? I can never get a good sound out of a Gibson". I said So if Entwistle or Pappalardi or Jack Bruce or Andy Fraiser walked in here, you wouldn't be able to record them?? Gimmee a break!

Nice basses in this thread! Wish I had a camera

Add me too!

Here's my '92 Les Paul honey burst. This was my first bass and I love it.:bassist:

There were 3 different Gibson basses with the same style body (Grabber and G-3's are different basses). They were....

Ripper - 2 pickups
Grabber - 1 sliding pickup
G-3 - 3 single coil pickups

The G3 sounded like most other Gibson basses at the time but maybe a bit cleaner.

Try before you buy. I personally love Gibson basses for classic rock, blues and maybe Motown. These basses are not for everybody. If you play funk, jazz or most other types of music, you will likely hate them.
You forgot to add that Rippers are set neck while Grabbers and G3s are bolt ons

OK, you're #28
