Close ups of my 69 showing the "G" stamped Schaller tuners ( 50s models had kluson banjo style tuners),
The chrome covered humbucker ( 50s models had a brown plastic single coil pickup), and the top hat style knobs ( 50s versions had brown plastic knobs)

Note to above post: the body has a black line painted like pin striping around the top edge of the body, I have seen a couple of reissues that did not have this line.
Also the reissues did not have painted on f holes.

Sanderic, Felix played a 50's EB1 at Woodstock and the Leslie West album Mountain was recorded before then as well. The only reason Gibson started making the EB1 again is because of Felix. His 50's bass was stolen and he couldn't find a replacement so he had Gibson make him one. At least that's the way I think it went.

I've heard that story too. Wish Gibson would start making them again, this time with the SG bass pickups, and the three point bridge. Heck, just make them with Bartolinis; if Alembic can make a great 29 scale bass, Gibson should be able to do the same. Problem is, Gibson would probably price it higher than an Alembic

I'm not a fan of the SG bass or most of what Gibson puts out these days either. To me the heart and soul of the bass is the original design sidewinder pickup. It's probably the most impractical pickup for modern tastes, but I love that sound. God Bless Curtis Novak for making a faithful reproduction.

Aren't they just BEAUTIFUL!!

So this was your first EB1(?) No DiMarzio.
Are the knobs the originals for the reissue because they're different to mine. (see post #7)
Unfortunately the previous owner screwed the thumb rest into the body above the strings, near the pickup, leaving 2 ugly screw holes!!!
Also, so far, mine seems to be the only one with the front strap button UNDER the neck. Wonder why?

The reissue EB1 came with witch hat knobs. swift1894 has black top hat knobs that were probably replacements. I'm surprised if the front strap pin is in it's original position but I guess it could have happened at the factory. The grain on your bass is very nice swift1894 and the thumb rest holes aren't so bad when compared to some of the badly hacked up and modified EB1s I've seen. After 40 plus years there's bound to be some dings here and there. I think I've got a couple cig burns on my bass.

Thanks. The strap button is definitely in it's original position, there are no other screw holes. I can't see any advantage for it being there as it just tips the top of the bass away.
