Try ebay. I believe the grabber and ripper used the same size case, and the only place to find a replacement is used. I contacted gibson when the reissues came out to see if they would sell the cases separately but they said they had no plans to do so and recommended Cedar Creek Cases. I didn't bother at that point as it will probably be in the $300 range to get a custom case made. On ebay original cases generally go for $150-200 but they aren't always available. I believe coffin is one of the only makers that has a case wide enough at the body to fit the width of the grabber/ripper body.

Grabber and Ripper were introduced in 1973, G3 in 1975. The Ripper would probably get a slight edge as the shipping totals (check the flyguitars page) show 39 Rippers shipping in 73 while only 1 Grabber did.

My first new bass was a 1974 Gibson Grabber w/maple body, neck and fretboard. For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to sell my bass gear before enlistng in the US Air Force in 1978. I was sooooooo wrong! I loved the bass and I love the pics. One day when my finances allow, I hope to own one again.

Post-NBD update - I finally got my Grabber!

It's an 82. Anyone with a keen eye might notice the nut is slightly shifted. I'm guessing a previous owner did this purposefully, as it puts the E string right at the edge of the fretboard, but I plan on bring it down to my usual guys this weekend to have that fixed. Other than some scratchy pots and a missing truss rod cover this thing is in pretty decent shape. The overall feel of the neck is a bit different than my G3. It's a little thicker, especially in the upper register, and the headstock shape is ever so slightly different. Looking at the back of the headstock, the A and D tuning keys have a little space between them on this bass whereas they're right up against each other on my G3. It's interesting. Either way, this bass sounds amazing. Thunderous. It will definitely fit nicely with my latest project (heavier rock group). The unfortunate thing is that now I have to sell a bass, and as much as I like it, the G3 is most likely the one that will be going.

Yep I have not been here for a while (one other club keeps me SLAMMED)...I am scouting for more of these to add to my personal pile...I have to give up the RD Artist bass to do it.....SO BE IT!!!! Randy thanks for covering the number system....you rock dude!
