Gibson Midtown Club.

I'm almost getting the feeling that Gibson may be discontinuing the model. Even AMS is heavily discounting the Midtown bass right now, at $779 a pop. It's really tempting, but I haven't even had a chance to try one out myself. And I don't think I can justify having two hollowbodies at this point in time, since I already have an Epiphone Jack Casady.

The Midtown and JC are similar. But the discount pricing on the Midtown ... hard to pass.

I've heard too that the Midtown is being discontinued.

I like it. Crème color would be good to match the binding.

There's apparently new model coming out - the midtown signature. Saw a listing on sweetwater the other day but it's gone now. There's also [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. I'm very tempted by the discounted price on the midtown, just can't justify it. Was very unimpressed by the one I played and I have a good stable of 4 string fretted basses.

Changes for the 2014 Midtown Signature:

  • Three finishes: Bullion Gold, Graphite pearl, Pelham Blue
  • Trapezoid inlays and a 120th anniversary logo
  • From this lefty image it looks like the cutaway has changed. More in line with the 73-74 Les Paul Signature models?
  • And $400 more expensive

Courtesy of the AMS Blowout, my Cherry Midtown arrived this morning. Out of the box, everything was perfect. There was some excess wax or polish at the end of the fingerboard that needed cleaned off, but the fit and finish was flawless. None of the photos I've seen online really do this bass justice. For $750 this is a killer bass! The neck is narrow at the nut like a T-bird, and does have a thicker feel, but not as chunky as the Les Paul bass. The neck feels fast, and the streamlined body shape feels great as well. The horns remind me more of the Starfire or a Peavey JF1 than the 335. The unplugged tone isn't quite as acoustic as my De Armond Starfire, but it's in the ballpark. Plugged in the B15 it sounds great! No adjustments needed. The neck pickup with the tone rolled off is pure chocolate, and the bridge pickup soloed has a nice midrange honk without being overly bright or ringing. Very nice! I would actually love to have a Tbird with a dual set of these neck pickups. Not sure if it's the placement up against the neck or if they are wired differently than TB+ - but it just sounds smoother and rounder.
