Gibson Reissuing The Gibson G3!

Here's the link to the Gibson page:

I'm a big Ripper fan, but I've never had a G3... reallly curious to check these out and see what the new pickups sound like. Some subtle differences in the body and a set neck too...

Agreed on the gig bag. It's a pain to find cases to fit these...but I guess that's what tape measures are for. Just found a used case for a pointy guitar that fits my Ripper Fretless a couple of weeks ago...cheap too.

There's a Subaru near, so you know it's here :smug:

I'm having my way with it for a few days before writing it up, but so far I'm really digging it. :bassist:

is it me, or does it seem like gibson got someone new in their company lately giving them a bit of a step up?? I mean hey, it's obvious they are at least listening to more people.. it just seems like out of nowhere they are giving more of what the people really want from their bass selection. the non-rev T-bird, now this?? at a decent price?? it's almost too good to be true.

There are other bass forums - Talkbass, while the largest is not where most dedicated Gibson players hang out. And we know the guys at Gibson lurk with us too :)

I love the look and that it has a standard neck. I just bought a Gibson Flying V two months ago and while I actually like the short neck it would have been nice to have another Gibby in my price range to compare and contrast. That being said at least I have a real case. I hate gig bags, my Godin came with one but it fits in a P or J case so it was an easy (cheap) fix.

I'm still waiting for a brave soul, or even a professional reviewer, to get their hands on one of these and report back. I'm on the fence between one of these and a 2009 Grabber. You'd think by the price the 2009 Grabber would be a better instrument, but who knows?

I guess I'm most curious about how the pickups are, considering they are a new design and how they compare to 70's G-3 pickups. Also how they compare to other Gibson basses.

I have the Grabber II and I don't like the angle of the string from the nut to the E&G tuners. I think it's is a terrible and amateur design flaw. I have compared it to the original which doesn't have this problem. Looks like they are using the same necks for the G3 tribute as the Grabber. Nonetheless I really enjoy playing the Grabber II, but I replaced the nut with a deep slot bone nut so the E string doesn't pop out so easily.

So you buy any chance have any audio clips of your Grabber II? I'd love to hear it, but haven't seen any on youtube or anything.

I don't know if this helps but here is a few jam ideas my band recorded in the lounge room.
All are the Grabber II with light overdrive in standard setting of the EBS multidrive into the DI of Trace V-Type V4. The bass is already a little dirty sounding. I think it has a Thunderbird pickup and it is very hot.

1st song is palm muted with a pick.
2nd is straight pick.
3rd is fingerstyle

Edit. Oh and strung with medium gauge chromes, tuned standard.

Hi Guys,
I am the guy who originally posted the G-3 reissue to Fly Guitars. Mine should be in tomorrow or Friday, and I will post some reviews after jamming with it over the weekend. I am pretty stoked. I have a 74 Ripper, 79 G-3, 81 Grabber, Epi Ripper, and now the new G-3 on the way. I ordered mine the day before they went online with them, and have high hopes! I`ll be in touch.

You won't regret it, I have a week in with it now, it's a sweet bass. I'm writing it up, and will post a review and some shots in a separate thread soon.
