How good is the Ripper?

I fail to see anything hideous about the headstock, though I gather it could have gone the Rickenbacker route rather than the Gibson route. This is a custom built from the ground up instrument. It isn’t some hack job made by some hack
Never said it was a hack job or that the builder was a hack. Looks like a great bass and the concept is awesome ( two of my all time favorite basses in one.) But, the headstock is ugly in my opinion. One of the big reasons I love Rickenbacker and Gibson is for their beautiful headstock designs... and this style of headstock is pretty much the opposite. I hate little headstocks and I think they're ugly.

I agree. The small headstock may not be hideous, but it's not a beauty. Besides looking like a Ripper, what's the reason for this build? Does it sound like a Ripper or a Rick? Get the sound of either without having to own both?

I posted this because:
A. I thought it was interesting (I still do and would love to at least play it and hear it and feel it)
B. I like both the Gibby Ripper and the Ricky 4003
C. I have a Mapleglo Ric 4003
D. I let a really nice Ripper escape me a few months ago because I tried to go less than an already great price of $1,200 and I am kicking myself in the head ever since because I haven't seen one anywhere as nice for anywhere near that low a price.
E. I never heard of the Luthier (Steve Mather) teaches luthiery in the Nashville Area
F. I think the bass is a cool idea combining two great iconic sounding basses. (Just wish it had electronics that Ripper had for in Phase, out of Phase, Series and Parallel on a rotary switch, though it does have series/parallel on the small toggle switch)
G. Custom Built from the Ground Up.
H. Sucker for Natural Finish

IMHO yes. At least partly. The interaction of a solid bodies mass to tone has been discussed and cussed elsewhere in Talk Bass. I think of the body as being like the sound board in a piano. Those Ripper Humbuckers probably have something to do with it as well. Their windings are turned 90 degrees to the way you normally see them in a humbucker. Anybody know why that was done.

Yes. But bit of history, The Rippers & grabbers started in 1973 (although 74 was when we see more of the release sales). a 74 ripper was all maple, big bodied with round horns, while the grabber was alder, slimmer with sharp horns. In 75 the ripper went to the same design as the grabber (alder boy, slimmer sharp horns) & stayed with alder til 77, when it was made of maple once again til the end of the run in 83. G3s were around in 75-76 i believe, & made of maple from start to finish in 83. as for big bottom end, it can be a factor, but then again with the pickups designed by Bill Lawrence, it has a nice balance.

Maybe, but something tells me he could've gotten away with creating a larger headstock than what it currently is. Nevertheless, it is a nice & well built bass. I'd have added a 3 way selector switch to isolate each pickup on their own along with the series/parallel mini.
 
I voted great bass. My 1976 Ripper is unwieldy, heavy and not really pretty, but it sounds really good. It also has a certain kind of magic to it and that unmistakable tone. I needed to file down the pretty bone nut (one of the best I've ever seen) and set it up considerably lower, it was quite hard to play when I first got it.

I've modded the selector switch, position 4 is now neck pickup only. I found that out of phase sound not very usable - neck only is really nice though, a smooth and broad mellow sound.

It sounds best played with a pick imo, but you still hear tons of that special character when finger picking. That jam video was great btw, and the bass sounded really good imo.

The Bill Lawrence designed pickups on the Ripper combined with the passive midrange choke have everything to do with the way a Ripper sounds, and why nothing else quite copies it.

The 90 degree tilt of the coils is what’s called a “sidewinder” humbucker. Gibson has used various incarnations of the sidewinder design for many years on many different basses and a few guitars. The goal was to come up with a pickup that had the response and sonic characteristics of a P90 pickup but without the noise. Like all single coils, P90s can get pretty noisy.

With dual coil pickups you run into a design consideration called “aperture” - which exists on a macro and micro scale.

On a vibrating string, different overtones appear at different points of the string along it’s length. Which is why where a pickup is located on the body relative to the bridge has a big impact on the fundamental tone of an instrument. Moving a pickup even a half inch up or down from the bridge will produce an audible difference in sound.

With two pickups the placement becomes even more important because you need to balance the higher output of the neck pickup where the vibrating string has more excursion against the weaker output of the bridge pickup - and also look for a pleasing blend of overtones each pickup is hearing. If you don’t you can end up with a muddy, thin, unpleasantly nasal, or harsh overall tone when both pickups are engaged.

On the micro level, a regular dual coil humbucking pickup also has an aperture. With the coils side by side each coil is picking up the string at two different spots and hearing two slightly different sets of overtones which produces a thicker, “fuller,” more harmonically complex sound. Almost like the tiniest hint of a chorusing or doubling effect. Two magnets also equal more available electrical energy so the overall output level is higher.

With a sidewinder design, the coils are rotated 90 degrees and the pole pieces are placed between them. So the string is picked up at what’s essentially only one point along it’s length. So you get what’s theoretically a single coil sound with the noise cancellation benefits of a humbucker.

In practice it’s a little more complicated then that. Because the coil geometries and strength of the magnets determines how wide the sensing area around each pole piece is. Hotter coils and stronger magnets will pick up more of the string area above the pole piece and get more overtones in the signal. So it’s a balancing act.

Bill Lawrence’s genius was in doing an unusually good balancing act. Through careful coil design and the selection of a very specific ceramic magnet (an Indox-6 if memory serves) he succeeded in creating an extremely narrow aperture sidewinder. Which is what gives the Ripper it’s characteristic clear core sound.

Those pickups, plus the cleverly versatile passive tonestack and switching scheme, are the heart and soul of the Ripper. Change out any of it (as has been done to so many Rippers) and you no longer have a Ripper IMO.

Rippers don’t sound like any other bass Gibson (or anybody else) has manufactured before or since. You want the Ripper sound, you get a Ripper, or you do without. It’s like a Ric in that respect - sometimes copied but never duplicated.

The fact it went largely unappreciated by a bass playing public (that was still trapped in Leo Fender’s gravity well) in no way diminishes what you accomplished during the so-called Norlin Years.

I have a vintage ‘75 Ripper made of Alder. I prefer the Alder because of the lighter weight. It is now my favorite bass and I would not trade or sell it for anything. I play it through one of the older USA made SVT-VR heads and an 8x10 cab. It is very versatile and playable. For me, it is the “magic” bass. It took a lot of work, however, to get it where it is.

I found it in a Tokyo pawn shop as a beat up black Ripper with an Ebony fretboard and significant wear. That was OK with me as i wanted a sunburst finish a la Rick Danko and those are very rare so I planned on having it refinished. It had the correct fretboard wood but it obviously needed a fret job as well. I bought it for a reasonable price and sent it to a luthier to have the work done. To my surprise, the luthier told me the frets were totally out of place and a new fingerboard would be needed for proper intonation. The bass had sounded “off” when I played it, but I figured it was a product of the heavy fret wear. I had pictures and measurements sent and sure enough the frets were totally off. It appeared as though the worker accidently grabbed a short scale fret patten when he started sawing for fret placement, then realized the mistake after about the fifth fret and hand spaced the rest of the frets to make up for the initial shorter placement. The result was some of the frets in the six to nine positions had wider spacing than frets in the two to five positions! I can only surmise that as ‘75 was a transition year in which Rippers were made both in Kalamazoo and Nashville that the workers in Kalamazoo were not too concerned with quality control. (The number on my bass suggests Kalamazoo manufacture.). After some unforeseen time and money that was not in the original budget, I have the Ripper that Gibson should have made and it is great.

It plays like a dream now, but given its condition, build quality, and where I found it, I sometimes imagine a poor bass player, probably named Ichiro, rocking out every night and catching hell from his guitar or keyboard player for always playing out of tune!

This is true, in my experience. And thanks to 40Hz for the detailed and helpful explanation above as to how the unique pickup design is the source of the Ripper’s unique tone.

He probably wasn't aware that the Ripper's scale length is 34.5" rather than the standard 34". That's a little design thing with Gibson. They also do 30.5" scale on some basses and use 300K rather than 250K pots on some models. The Ripper uses 300K.

This is new to me. Perhaps there is a connection to the fact that I like the sound of guitars with P-90s and the sound of The Ripper.

Could be. I really like P90s too. It’s my preferred pickup for a guitar.

But magnet and coil geometry are also important. The mudbucker is a sidewinder too. But it was a little too much of a good thing.

So you can see they’re essentially the same design despite sounding radically different.

Anything is possible but as the bass as purchased was all original, I didn’t consider the possibility that the Gibson factory could accidently have a template for a 34” scale length lying around. That’s why I figured a Gibson short scale template to be the likely culprit. By the way, though it does not seem like much, I like the extra 1/2 inch in scale length for the extra tension in the low E string when playing an open E.
