The key word to me is "free." I can get a very affordable Fender that I'll like, but the Gibsons I like (Memphis, T-Bird) are prohibitively expensive to me. My vote for a freebie goes to a premium Gibby.
There have been some super cool Gibson basses over the years but the problem is they never stick with them. The ones they do keep in their lineup do nothing for me. So it has to be Fender.
Now if Gibson still made Victorys, RD's, Rippers, Grabbers and the original style EB from just a couple of years ago, I would probably be voting Gibson in this thing.
Why not take one of each? Sort of like have pie with ice cream. Love my Fender, don't have a Gibson, anymore only an Epiphone, but Gibson has made some great basses. I noticed that Gibson seems to look at basses as an afterthought
Well, since this is a fantasy - a Vintage Sunburst Gibson Midtown bass would be nice - a lefty Vintage Sunburst Gibson Midtown bass.... As for Fender? I already have a P-Bass in 3-tone burst; as a lefty, my only other available choice would be a black one. And, I don't need 2 of them. My only other Fender choice would be a Jazz bass (same color choices), and I really don't want one of those at all..
