I already own basses by both and a 70's Gibson SG.
Nothing wrong with any of them, but I'd say the Fenders are a bit more versatile tone-wise.

Bass - probably a new active USA Precision deluxe.
Guitar - our guitarist's Les Paul Standard.

I started this poll to get statistics for an English speech that I did on which brand out of the two is better in general.

ENTIRELY different animals as far as I'm concerned. Different tools for different needs.

Gibson seems to have the idea that sticking a longer neck on a guitar makes a good bass. None of their basses I have tried have every been a real pleasure to play.
