Gig bags. Which brand do you use?

Over in the Club Sadowsky thread, there has been some discussion regarding gig bags. Of course, the large majority of Sadowsky owners prefer the Sadowsky-branded Portabag (it’s a really nice bag).

While I prefer hardcases for storage, I love a good gig bag for local gigs, jams & practices.

I’ve tried a number of bags and the one I can’t seem to beat is the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It’s so plush, sturdy and relatively lightweight. Big pockets and extremely comfy to wear on my shoulders.

Curious… what’s your go-to gig bag and why?

Mono Dual all day long. I've had mine for several years and it still looks new. Lots of storage. No regrets at all.

I tried a Mono bag a few years ago. Really nice but felt awkward on my shoulder. Not sure which one is was. Maybe I tried the wrong bag.

Mono Vertigo. It’s simply the best as far as I’m concerned, both in design and quality. I’ve got a Mono M80 as a backup/second bag if I ever need to bring two basses.

These two, because they actually fit my basses well, which many others including the Mono ones I've tried do not: Reunion Blues Continental vs. RBX Oxford Gig Bags

One other feature I really like is the relatively minimal storage pocket size, but I'd be fine with no storage capacity at all for anything but the bass actually.

+1 for Mono cases

I use the M80 single and dual bags. I’ve never had a problem with them and the single is going on 7 years or so.

I currently own (opens closet door, does a quick count) six different brands of gig bag, accumulated over the course of over 30 years:
- Ken Smith
- ProTec Contego
- Mono M80 Dual
- generic no-name
- Road Runner
- Musician's Friend house brand, from back when they used to offer three different levels of protection; mine is their top-of-the-line model from probably 20 years ago

Of those, the ProTec and the Mono are tied for first place in terms of being my "favorite" as they both offer significantly better protection than any of the others. If I ever have to buy yet another gig bag it will almost certainly be either a ProTec or a Mono.

I’ve looked at that for a nice low profile option. I like the top-load design. Do you have the grey with the red bottom? Or the all black?

Gator because my Mono is too small for my Thunderbirds. But I prefer Mono for every other bass.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have the same one arriving tomorrow. I've need something a little thinner without the large pockets. Looks like it should fit the bill.

For protection I don't think you can beat the Portabags (or Access Stage 5s). Great storage space and handle placements as well. They're a bit heavy for me to wear on my shoulders, however, so they're not always ideal for the gigs and rehearsals I do. The other bags I own are a Contego (meh) and a Mono M80 (good bag overall but I would happily trade it for a Vertigo).

When I bought my Sadowsky bass, the zipper on my bag fell apart within the first 6 months. I’m sure it was a freak incident, and the bags are fine. But! I ordered a Mono Vertigo to replace it, and it’s been great for the last few years.

I purchased a bass that came in a Sadowsky bag a few years ago and the zipper exploded on that one, too. I wonder if there was just a bad batch….

I take public transit to most of my rehearsals and gigs and I’ve found that the “perfect” gig bag is something of a rainbow colored unicorn for me.

I have had an iGig bag (no longer in business, I think) for about 15 years and I love everything about it except it’s weight and I wish it had a hip belt along with its backpack straps.

I recently bought an Incase bag (they no longer make instrument cases) from a TB member here in town and I really like that bag as well. It’s lighter and has a hip belt but that bag is very short and will not fit anything longer than a P-bass (and that means no J-basses!). Otherwise it’s just about perfect.

Before getting the iGig I used a Mooradian for about 20 years. Hated the single strap (new ones have double straps) but it was great otherwise. Limited pocket space, sadly, but that thing really held up well.

I have a double bag from Levy’s that’s very well made but the padding is only so-so.

My Reunion Blues guitar bag is really nice but I’ve never owned one of their bass bags.

IGIG. Discontinued but an amazing bag. The single I bought 8 years ago. Still looks new. Bought the double a few years ago when they were banging them out. paid something like 175.
