Gday guys its been a while,
wondering if anyone here can steer me in the right direction for buying my first bass rig for playing live , FINALLY its starting to happen , I play an active bass and just want to plug straight in no pedals besides a tuner , am looking for value for money (say around 800 to 1000 aussie dollar limit) but don't want to sacrifice too much on quality, I have no idea what im looking for so any advice is appreciated, a combo would suit me a bit better but am open to any and all suggestions

With everything today, I think you are better off getting a lightweight head, and a pair of 2x10s, 1x12s, or 1x15s. This makes loading easier, and allows you to take as much or as little as you need for the practice/gig.

Don't know what you have available there, but that's my suggestion.

any suggestions on brands or is it all down to personal preference ?

I think it is really going to come down to your ears. What I might like and look for in my rig is probably not going to be what you want. I use a Genz Benz rig, Streamliner 900 and a NeoX 212T cabinet. Very lightweight, more than enough power and the tone is perfect for what I want. The cab weighs just over 50lbs and the head weighs 6, but I bought it all on the used market and it ran me right around 1100.00USD. I really only list it as an example of what an option may be and there are many. Gallien Krueger makes some great combos and they have some excellent lightweight cabs and heads that you can generally find on the used market pretty reasonably.

Old school tone, Modern tone - just depends on what your preferences are. I suggest you just go check some out and narrow your search down to what you like.

Depends on your bandmates, too. Loud drummers, and guitarists, can force you to play louder just to be heard.

My personal preference is a 2x10 combo, but there are a lot of variables in this discussion. Volume is one, tone is another. The style of music you're playing is also a big factor.

If CL is right about prices, definitely start with used. Lots of great stuff out there depending on your ears and wallet. Best to stick with names you know, and go for what grabs you - different strokes different folks.

If you asked 10 people for recommendations for brands, you would get at least 5/6 suggestions. Stick with the big names. I like my Carvin BX-500 head, but not likely there are many out your way. Nothing like getting something powerful under 6 pounds, and many of them are hybrids. As to cabs, it really comes down to personal choice on sound, never mind price, weight, and driver size.
