Gig w/Ampeg Backline

Band had a gig Saturday at Maryland Live Casino in Hanover, MD. They had full backline and they had a mint Ampeg SVT and an Ampeg 8x10 refrigerator waiting for me. First time ever playing through one. Sounded good. Not quite as loud as I thought it would be though. Also all amps were turned sideways. Nothing facing forward.

The turned sideways thing is so they don't interfere as much with the PA out front and to lessen the bleed through the vocal mics. Can be a good strategy in some situations. If you were standing in the beam, that rig should be loud enough for anybody.

I agree. It's way too good a tone for anyone who's never heard one to desire it, because quite honestly, people who have never heard one have no idea bass can sound so awesome.

Hi,

That sounds like a pretty hefty backline. I've had Ampeg backlines with both the 8x10 and 4x10 and, while the 410 is really nice, the 810 is taller and really lets you hear it. Goodness!

I find more clarity about every other cabinet out there.

I'm not doggin them, I just don't like them for me and what I'm doing.

There has been more GK being supplied by companies and I will always take that if I can.

Had to recheck my post. I didn't say it wasn't loud. Just saying at the settings I dialed in, I thought it would be louder. It was quite loud enough. Just expected more is all.

Sideways hmmm? Ask your drummer if it was loud. My 100w v4b side washed at my drummer just about tore his hair off. Of course to me, it was just about right. It's all about where you are in relation to the cabs.

Lessening the bleed into the house is good enough reason to do it.

Sideways as in laying a fridge over on its side is about the dumbest proposition out there.

In my last band, my guitarist and I almost always sidewashed our rigs. As my guitarist put it, "Your ears on the sides of your head, not the back." I never needed guitar in my monitor. I still sidewash on gigs with big PA reinforcement.

What's it to you what I prefer? How do you know the rest of the band wants to hear me going cross the stage anyway? Maybe I put it where I put it so certain members of the band can hear me better and certain members can't hear me as well. At any rate, the soundman doesn't dictate what I do. When the soundman becomes the draw, then he or she can dictate what I do.
