Hardshell cases are heavy, bulky, and a pain in the butt.

I carry my own basses, nobody else is allowed to. I carry them back and forth to gigs in my own vehicle. I always bring two basses. I can carry one on my back, ...
I have never had a bass damaged in a gigbag..... As long as the gig bags are decent quality and have lots of padding, they offer plenty of protection.

I wouldn't want a car to run over my bass in a bag, but I don't think that a hardshell case would protect it any better in that situation.
With ya on all counts Jeff.

'Cept I sling one bass over each shoulder on my first trip into the club, along with junkbag in hand.

Clubbass has the perfect solution even for that:

Gigbag - but when you need it you put the GIGBAG into a hardshell protector (SKB Bass Safe).

Any opinion on that?
Also, do you think the CB gigbag is worth its money? (209 Can)

Man, if your talking about your 535, you should put that thing in a hardshell case. That's a real nice bass, and I would never take the chance with that. I think a hard shell case is totally worth it. They can sometimes be a pain in the butt, but if you really think about it, the extra hassle it not that bad in the long run. :bassist:

I voted no preference. It all depends on the situation. If your going to toss yoru bass in yoru car and drive over to yoru friends place to jam a gig bag is probalby all you need.

However if your going on a one month vacation to say ... europe, and you want to bring your bass with you ... well i'd have to call you a dufus for not buying a hardcase to ship your bass. Because your just asking for trouble like that ... Mu friend went to malta and he brought his fender 5 string jazz bass with him. When he got it back at the air port he discovered several foot prints across the hard case. Now if he had a gigbag that bass would have been screwed.

But not all hardcases are hernia makers. My old high schools bass hardcase is actualy quite slim and pretty light, even when full ... despite the fact that it's sort of falling apart from about a decade of abuse from idiotic grade 9 "bassists".

It depends on the situation, but more often then not, i'd probably go for the hard case. And besides ... i've seen some of you guys spend a good $3000 US on a bass ... you know how ******** it is to have somethign happen to it becase you didn't use a hardcase?

I've always used hardshell cases, and always will. Those things can fall out of an airplane at 10,000 ft. and while the bass may be destroyed (just due to the force of impact), the case is still good to go. Now I know that doesn't show that they provide good protection, but would you drop your bass in a gig bag out of an airplane at 10,000 ft. or even 20 ft. for that matter???

Do you guys like those smaller, form fitting cases? I got one with my Jazz but it only has room for a tuner. The old ones, because they are rectangular, can hold much more.

I much prefer the smaller, 'teardrop' cases... they're so much lighter to carry and much easier on the wrist. Fit on the bus better too, although you get less respect with them. I usually carry cables/gig emergency toolkit in my backpack anyway.

I put my MTD in the back section of a good double gig bag, and the front section is usually empty. This provides double protection for the front of the bass -- the neck, bridge, knobs, etc. -- and I can throw extra music or whatever in the front section if the pockets are full. If I need my Kramer, I just toss it in the front section and go.

Link Removed hard cases ... wow ...

ummm riiight page isn't working ... either their site sucks ... or my computer is sucking more. whatever their cases don't suck. I'm looking at ine in a "Guitar Player" magazine looks like aluminim with reenforced sides and a hydraulic arm to hold the case open. Very nicely padded ... definitly something i'd consider for taking my bass or guitar with me on a plane.

Although already mentioned, I just thought I'd provide a link to see Invalid Link Removed . I'm gonna look into getting one of these. You just slip your bass IN IT'S GIG BAG into the shell and lock it and it has wheels. I'm sold as long as it isn't that thin plastic. Got some meat behind it, ya know? If it's a thin flimsy plastic shell that would give way with a 5 pound bag of sugar sittin' on it, the I'll pass. But it looks really good in concept.
