i use a gig bag about 80% of the time. Like everyone else who says it depends on the situation, distance, and travle arrangments. I would love to get an incase, but to send it to canada is a lot of cash!! Anyone know where i could pick one up in canada or where sells them in NY, and how much?
they just seem like the best of both worlds :)

Hardshell is all I use... I used to use a gig bag, but I don't really trust it, if I were to drop it or something. I trust the protection of a hardshell, and I get a lot of storage space for 4 cables and a microphone, as well as some other small assorted goodies. Plus, I don't know if my gig bag is crappy, but it takes me so long to get my bass into the gig bag.

I just picked up a double gig bag at Lowdown Sound yesterday. I think this will be the primary mode of transport for the Hannie twins.

Peace,

James
Bump.

Hey James...
It's been a while since you posted this; how's the double gig bag holding up? I'm thinking about trekking to LDS before long; if you don't mind sharing, what kind of bag is it and how much did it run you? I'm trying to decide whether a double bag would make sense for me and the guys at Low Down will likely be my source, but I'd like to get an idea what I'm getting into beforehand... Thanks :)

The Levy's double bag is serving me very well. Can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but I'm thinking it was in the $90 - 100 range.

Peace,

James

as of now i have a hard case. its a great case but its just to heavy most of the weight is my bass but the case and crap inside makes it heavy also. i recently was at a jazz festival this weekend and i had to hall my bass around in the hard case all over the place for atleast 6 hours! my hands have blisters now. so now i am thinking of selling the hard case and buying a good gigbag im think of the fender tweed deluxe gig bag i think it has 20mm of padding which is pretty good i think. but the cool think about gig bas is that you can carry them on your back and store a major amount of stuff in them. but in the end should i just stay with my hard case or go with the light easy to transport mon bulky gig bag??

I've got a Levy gig bag for my 5 string Cirrus. I love it. Now I can get my bass in my car in the back seat. The hardcase that came with it was too long. Very light, and it has straps to carry over my shoulder. Way better than my hardcase. I've used it for over two years and it's never let me down.

Very durable...and it protects, IMHO, as well as the hard case. It is not your typical sale item from MF. Expensive but well worth it. It has a big pocket in front for all my cords and smaller items, etc. My bass has never been out of tune because of it.

Personally, I think that hardcases tend to make a person less careful...whereas with a gig bag, I am more concious of how I hold it, carry it and set it down...though I've had a few close calls, but the bag keeps my bass protected very well.

My honest opinion would be to have both! The hardcase for storing and touring, and the gigbag for instances like you were mentioning. I just auditioned for Disturbed, and half the guys there had hardcases. They looked miserable lugging that thing around and trying to make space in line with it. Everyone else, myself included, just slung the gigbag over one shoulder and was good to go. I will have both. A hardcase for each bass that I own, and at least one gigbag for special occasions. Can't go wrong there....oh, and one more thing. Look at some of the Warwick gigbags...they are extra sturdy and have a neck rest built in. :D

I will only choose gig bag to carry my bass, since a hardcase is too heavy for me. Recently, I'm using a Undercover Gig Bag to carry my Warwick Thumb BO6, and I have no complaint with it! The bag is durable and nice padded, but follow what Stingraymund said, the disadvantage of a gig bag is that it will cause the tuners to go out. But I do think it is good!
