When you hire a road crew, you expect that the will perform certain tasks, such as transport and setup, etc.

It is irrelevant that it is on a professional level the statement made no caveat for them being paid/hired.

By your statement, they very act of hiring a road crew should prevent you from being taken seriously as a musician as the employment includes that expectation.

Geddy has the means to amplify himself BECAUSE he hires a road crew and PA gear. The OP has not taken such a step. Rather, she assumed that PA gear would either be provided by her band or the club.

Clearly you are thinking straight and on the right path!

Just pointing out tho, you can call and ask "do you have a PA/backline" but the bar's standard of "suitable for your needs" can be a world away from your band's standard. I've seen it many times....a "state-of-the-art PA system" that was meant for street buskers, or a "pro quality backline" that consists of a beat to snot Peavey cab with 2 drivers blown and a staticky input jack.

He makes a good point. I play a lot of the venues that you are likely to play with these guys - or any other local NYC band - and calling the vunue can often be a real runaround.
Most NYC music venues, with really very few exceptions, have a bass cab on the premises that you will be able to use.
That said, the quality or condition of that cab can often be a real crapshoot and is more often than not very different from any description you might get from a website/sound engineer/bartender/club owner when you inquire. I've been told to expect a certain rig by a club owner the night before a gig only to find a completely different rig there when I arrived. I've also arrived to find nothing there... more than once. A lot more than once!

If you really want to play it safe, stop by the club earlier in the day for that night's show. Otherwise, expect the unexpected. It's part of the "thrill" of gigging in NYC.

I usually bring a head, sometimes bring a cab but ALWAYS bring a DI. You just never know....
