The OP was painful to read for reasons other than a mere misspelling, or an aggravating anecdote. There should never be quotations from more than one person in a paragraph, and said quotes need to be prefaced with commas & bracketed with quotation marks.

Under-education is usually not the fault of a school, but of a student, provided that the material is presented adequately, but not absorbed. The English language really is written as it is spoken, but one must understand the basic rules for doing so.

Jeez, I've become a Henry Higgins type, but the irony is that I'm a Yank telling a Brit how to write a bit closer to what used to be called, "the King's English," in the mother country.

Of course it's not illegal to occasionally spell words incorrectly. I was pointing out the irony in your post. You were bemoaning the fact that lots of people in Keighley are uneducated, and at the same time highlighting the fact that you, yourself, are in fact as uneducated as the chavs you look down upon.

Far-too-many people don't know how to write properly, much less well. There are the usual pet peeves of there/their/they're and your/you're, as well as our/are, but I have also seen abuses of now/know, for which there really should be no excuse, since it's essentially student irresponsibility that is the root of most of these. Most people don't read enough well-written stuff either. A few weeks of following the news, and observing how stuff is written can likely cure a lot of this, but I would wager that most young people are not up to the challenge of doing this. To them, news is "boring." Then they wonder why they feel like they have no voice in the public arena, in terms of shaping their future via participation in the political proces...or worse; they are prone to be sold a bill of goods by either side of the political spectrum (mods, notice how I have kept this politically opinion-neutral).

We all are prone to bastardizing how our language is written; look no further than my own sig to see that, but one must be able to demonstrate the ability to write more passably and acceptably, if one is truly wanting to make sufficient headway in the job market. Context is everything. The development of one's writing skills is no different than the eventual evolution that we go through with how we wear our hair (i.e. the tendency to wear more "businesslike" styles as we age), or eventually remove the excessive piercings that we may have gotten when young. Of course, tattoos are a bit more permanant, but I would imagine that the business of removing them will continue to be a growth industry for some time to come. Most of them look wretched over time, and it'll be fun to see all of the vain people out there trying to cope with their ink with age.

well it was our first offered gig so we wanted it, by the way my band doesnt know the old band as well as me, i wasnt too keen on the idea but then its a band decision, plus we were on before them so it was a good time for a good shot to show them up- to show that we were good and they werent (i meant all of their songs are just 4 chords played over and over just at different rhythms, i mean ok for maybe one, possibly two but all of your set?)

and anyway we got a decent pay out of it since all of my bands friends lived in the area of the venue so there was a big turn out and we got about £170 out of it which is pretty spot on

so what's the complaint? you got paid. forget about it and move on.

lol. Yeah, that's exactly what I was trying to avoid. (Being "that guy" )

I agree on the statement of being hypocritical but I the original post was a good read, even if it wasn't grammatically correct.

Anyway, back to the topic. I don't want to derail this thread. We've all been in situations like this and it's a good conversation piece.
