Girl Bassists

i have yet to see a girl play the bass good. sure i know a lot do, but none where i live. they think (this only applies to the girls i know) that they can get by on looks and guys like them because they are eye candy. im not saying a girl cant play bass because she is a girl, im just saying that i have yet to hear a good one.

if i were a girl i think i'd play bass for david bowie.

i think gail ann dorsey (that's her name, right?) is a complete and total sweetheart (met her at BP live) - and can play - but I can't help to believe that the MAIN reason she's got the gig with bowie is cuz of what she looks like - AND CUZ SHE'S A GIRL.

also - i think there really is something to all the sexist stuff that gene simmons is famous for saying. there are lots of male shredders out there on guitar and bass, but it almost always seems lacking when a girl picks up the instrument. i have actually seen a girl shredder once, in a local band called the Resin hits. I've seen women really hold their own on a bass also, but I've never seen a female flea, wooten, or pastorious - nor a female hendrix, satriani, or bumblefoot.

put that in your tutu and smoke it!

I went to watch The Bangles a while ago at Manchester University and have to say I was astonished at what a really GREAT ROCK BAND they actually were. Very tough players. Not in the slightest bit wimpish.

Mickey Steele remains one of the most inventive and solid players I have heard - studio or live - in quite some time. The fact that she's a babe too is merely a happy bonus.

It's not what you've got between your legs that counts, but what's between your ears.

Then you need to check out this small sample , my friend:

The first bassist plays in Prince's NPG band (and has been there some time). [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

The next one I've heard will be touring with Victor Wooten (not opening). Link Removed

I could list a ton more (M'chelle, Maximina, Kim Khahn, Leah Randi, Jennifer York, Carrie Melbourne, etc.)

Maybe you should Google them and check out the mp3's on their sites...I think you'll find out that there are some OUTSTANDING females bassists out there!

Have you seen Jennifer Batton(sp?) play? I saw her on the Jeff Beck tour and she rocks!!
Jen is a guitarist. I did not know she was playing bass now. She has done guitar clinics all over the world. Nice girl too. Spent some time talking with her at NAMM a few years back. SHe is a SMOKIN' hot guitarist.... Currently David BOwie is touring with a female bass player. I do not know her name, but she is definatly a kick ass player. She would have to be to meet Bowie standards.

Her Name is Gail Ann Dorsey, www.gailanndorsey.com, and she's been with Bowie since 1995 I think.
Moby also has a female Bassist called Greta Brinkman who is also a kick ass Player. Check out her Website - Link Removed. She's also a fellow Leftie player.

Prince's Bassist Rhonda Smith is also a great bassist.

That woman can't reach the tuning pegs of her basses but she outplays the majority of the people out there.
