Give Double Thumb and Flat Pick Instead

After church, I was jamming a bit with a drummer playing muted flatpick licks. He said how much it sounded like Marcus Miller, and certainly gets that vibe. I am a miserable double thumber, but I am actually good with (God Bless Chris Squire & Anthony Jackson,) I just need to build my endurance since I don't pick as much as I used to. My question is, why fool with the thumb when I can do it with my pick?

Because in reality you can't do it with a pick. No offense, but a drummer isn't going to dissect Marcus millers technique as much as a fellow bassist is. You can't slap with a pick, that's really all there is to it.

The drummer plays bass too. I can do the traditional LarryGraham/Marcus Miller slap just fine. I guess I would rather improve something I already do pretty well instead continually fumbling with something I can't seem to master.

I disagree because I feel that picking while palm muting sounds very close to double thumbing while palm muting. I think I can make it work for me.
And I like that you're willing to a do what works for you and improve upon it. It just isn't slap, not should it be considered slap.not that you really do, but they are distinctly different styles. I can double thumb, I never play with a pick. So do what works for you.

I did not say it was slap. I said it sounds like slap. Really, I think the palm muting is more important than the thumb or flat pick in this case.

hum yes and no ... you can definitively pull the string to slap but the thumb attack won't be there ... just like you can use a combination of pick and fingers on the guitar ...

I say keep developing the pick. There is not a single slapper that can top the funk from Bobby Vega's pick. I think For the Love of Money is one of the funkiest grooves of all time. There are plenty of thumpers and wanna be thumpers slinging ripped off double thumb licks. There are very few plectrum players funkin' it up. If you already have something original going on, keep it up. It is better to be an innovator than an immitator.
