GK head with Mesa 6x10?

Hi guys,
I'm currently looking around to upgrade my gear and at the moment im looking at the Gallien Krueger 700RB II and the GK 1001RB II amps. Ive been doing some research and it seems alot of people are going for the 700RB II as it is a bit punchier and has a better low end.

Unfortunately i havent got the luxury of trying before buying as our music shops dont hold alot of quality stock, so im wondering if you guys could give me a hand.

What im planning on running it through is my Mesa 6x10 cab. I play a 6 string in a progressive metal band with guitarists who use 7 strings, so i need something that is punchy and will sound nice with the highs but also not going to be too boomy with the lows. I also play a fair bit of jazz, so im looking for some diversity in my sound.

If anyone has any ideas on this, itd help me out. I hate going in blind, so any help will be awesome. Thanks

thanks,
yeah i thought that may have been the only real difference, ive just read in a few other posts people comparing the two and thought maybe there was a tonal difference hiding in there somewhere

not true,i own the 700rbII and compared both before buying. the 700 sounded alot better to me. just fuller or warmer sounding i guess.

There could be many things that could cause that, but the 700rbII and 1001rbII have the exact same components, (Except the power section) same pre, same everything else, the 1001rbII will sound exactly like a 700rbII and vise versa, only you will need to push the 700rbII harder to get the same volume as a 1001rbII due to the wattage difference.

IMHO The only tonal difference between a 700rbII and 1001rbII is the sound an extra $200 makes as it's being yanked from your hand :) But don't take my word for it, book on over the the GK site and check for yourself. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I take it you already have the Mesa 610? I would go with the GK 700 if I was you. You will get that GK sound that you are after with the GK 700 compared to the 1001. If you don't already have the 610 go get yourself a GK Neo cab. I traded in my Mesa cab for one lighter and punchier sounding.

You mean, like this:

My main gigging rig is a 700rb-II into a PH610 - it is the best sounding rig I've ever owned... I prefer the 700rb-II over the 1001rb-II, as it gets the sound I'm looking for at any realistic gig volume I'll ever need...

Thats true, but the same sound can be had from a 1001rbII.

Not at the same volumes - Bob Gallien himself has stated that his amps tonal differences will vary, depending on the volume needs of their users...

I own a pair of the 700rb-IIs, and would not trade either of them for a 1001rb-II, as the 700s are perfect for my needs...

Ahhh this is interesting, so it seems like you get a better sound from the 700rb II because you need to push it a little harder? This is probably what im after then. The power in the 1001rb II may end up just being overkill, especially if i cant push it

I do already own the Mesa 610, but im running an Ashdown head + compressor + 31 band EQ just to get the sound im after, and i still havent quite got it. What im hoping is to cut down the amount of gear ive got by just getting a nicer head.

Im trying for a nice all round sound, agressive, but smooth enough to play jazz as well. Cause im playing a 6 string, im wanting something that will allow me to play my low B and have it sound clear and thick and also let me play around the high C without losing too much
