TL/DR … Watch yer switches!
So over the last few weeks I’ve been less than happy with the sound coming out of my Legacy 800 1x12 combo. This little single 12 box usually slays giants and holds its own on nearly every gig no matter the room.
As per my earlier posts, I thought I may have blown a speaker or worse yet, damaged the amp somehow. The tone seemed to be less punchy and the volume level wasn’t awesome.
So, I thought maybe I’ve been working it too hard, pounding a low B through it over and over. Maybe better to bring the extension 12 to take a load off the combo? Boom! Tone and volume was back baby.
Also during these last few weeks I’ve been experimenting with various pedals like a comp, EQ, preamp, HPF, etc., and felt like none of it was worth the trouble.
So speaking of trouble (shooting) I had a few days this week to set up my gear at home and try and isolate any issues.
Well wouldn’t you know it - the speaker select switch was clearly in the lower position with internal at 200 watts and external at 600 (to a 4 ohm load) good heavens! … this could explain my single vs double cab revelation.
I obviously keep the switch in the middle at 400/400 and even have a pro piece of gaff tape over it help prevent this very issue.
Good news - gig last night - 9-piece dance band - the single Legacy combo brought the earth shattering kaboom and I was back in business! Tonight is a rockin 5-piece playing more party rock stuff so the second cab is already in the car!
I have a nice tuki cover for the combo but I usually end up sliding each cab into a rock n roller R12 cart. I’m gonna have to be more careful or maybe devise some new protective covering that wouldn’t cause any damage. Any suggestions?
