GK Legacy Combos

@sonosamas

Thanks for your review- I especially appreciate the grab n go comment on the 12.

I have a Markbass 1x12 combo and at just under 30lbs, it’s not exactly light either. I’m talking about situations like running up a flight of steps or schlepping a good city block or so.

Maybe I need one of those old GK MB lunchboxes with the shoulder strap gig bag - do they still make those?
Retailers are still selling GK's MB108 and MB110 - I think the MB110 might fit the bill for compactness and power.

I haven't played either combo, but I think Legacy has its roots in MB so I presume they are similarly great. I think I saw somewhere that Legacy is replacing MB, but I don't know when or to what extent - or even if that's true.

Two reasons why I like the newer Legacy combos over the MB line are 1) the new material that replaced tolex and 2) the metal grill. The cabinet liner reminds me of Rhino liner that goes in a pickup truck bed -- VERY tough. And I'll take a metal grill over cloth/vynil any day. The metal grill was one selling point for me on my little Markbass, even though I hate their lint-grabbing carpet.

A third reason I like Legacy is the 120v-240v power so I don't have to worry about overseas compatibility. Really good calls by GK, IMO.

I actually treat my gear very delicately, but I really like the piece of mind the stronger materials provide with the Legacy combos. Excellent choices from GK.

...hence my suggestion for a Legacy 110! ...with a tough exterior and a metal grill (GK are you listening?) ;)

Hey just wanted to bump this ... there are a couple GK threads going tho. I got the new Legacy 12 combo plus 12 Neo IV and it’s ridiculous.

Just picked up a little gig for this Friday - a bluesy classic rock pub type thing where I’d normally take my Fender w flats (see above for size reference) but I’m taking my Jazz 5 with rounds to give the single combo a workout.

I did do one gig with the same basic group with the fender and combo and it was plenty loud enough with volume to spare. I want to thonk on the low B and see how the 1x12 feels.

I’ve got an fdeck hpf in the gig bag in case things get woofy but otherwise gonna run it straight in and see how it goes.

Mini gig report:

Motored north up past the Harrisburg skyline toward Ft Indian Town Gap, Snitz Creek Brewery.

Very nice place but sketchy load in. Fortunately I could one-hand the GK 12 combo and maneuvered the stairs like a boss. The drummer used the keg slider for his trap case. Both ways.

I was relegated unceremoniously to the corner but that’s ok - it sounded good. I don’t always drink beer, but when I do it’s the house Märzen.

~~~
Long story short, the single combo kicked butt. I played my Lakland 5 and the notes stayed solid all the way down. Impressive. We got a little loud at times with two guitars, keys, & drums but it sounded fat.
I could’ve add a little more low end but wanted to keep the overall vibe polite since it was kind of a fill in type gig. Looking forward to some upcoming outdoor events where I can bring both cabs and lower the sonic boom.
I have a question about volume for the Legacy 112 combo. Since it has an 800 watt amp with only the one 12 inch speaker, is there any guide as to how loud to set the volume with the trim dimed? I have a few pedals that can impact the volume and I need to set those accordingly, but I want to make sure I don't damage the speaker. The combo can get very loud. It sounds fantastic!
GK Legacy 1x12 combo maiden voyage with upright bass.
Easy one hour gig this evening at a business cocktail social, jazz trio : keys, horn, & bass.
Very quiet background jazz, but the room got considerably louder toward the end.
Since I’ve been using a Markbass cmd 121p combo for several years, it’s my main frame of reference. When I plugged in the GK it almost sounded like a 15! Plenty of juice, super easy to EQ a nice tone straight in from Full Circle pickup.
Only small downside was logistical … since the GK is a bit bigger than the Markbass, it’s a little less svelte when maneuvering between guests seated at 8 top round tables and in and out doors etc … but certainly not a deal breaker.
in conclusion, still psyched about this combo. This Sat I’ve got a cover band reception so I’ll be playing the 5 string into the GK combo plus Neo IV 12 extension cab. Looking forward to that one.
I love seeing the double bass with this amp! What is the microphone you are using? Does it need a preamp?
I’ve been using a Full Circle as my main pup for years. It plays nice with a lot of amps even without a preamp - even the 500K input of the Markbass.
I’ve always liked the 1MegOhm input on the GKs - very handy for my upright as well as passive basses.
