GK MB 200: Part Two

GREAT, Avezzano!!! That's the greatest little cab!

I cannot top that for sure, but wanna show my home- and little-gig-rigs anyway:

GK 112MB combo with homemade front (amp basically is a 200MB, so fits the thread, right?)
GK 200MB top plus ART TubePac pre-amp/compressor with a GK 212 MBE

My GK 400RB with 2x GK 112Neo cabs are in our practice room.

GK fan? Me??? ;)

did you ever try Gallien & Krueger? :smug:

Today afternoon I gave a crank to the MB200 to push this little bastard micro cab and... wow!!! The typical sound of the Ciare CM161: powerful, fast and punchy is right there!!! Lots of power/volume, too. I suspect that in a small club this box could handle a moderate volume gig, acoustics or soft jazz, without any problem!!!!!

what do you mean with that?

And another plus: You could take it there on your Vespa (or bicycle)!

what do you mean with that?

I replaced the original metal grill of the combo by a cloth front.

Are you actually gonna try the 200MB plus mini cab in a gig situation?

WOW! Must be quite a sound you get out of your "mini" rig!

I now see that you are from Italy! When you come over to the Netherlands and you have some time, stop by.
The Hague where I live is just a short drive from Noordwijk. If so, PM me for the address. And be shure to bring the mini cab! ;)

Ah, I know the drill. I used to work for an American company. Regularly had to go to the head office for meetings and such. The company car collects you from the airport, takes you to the hotel, next few days: business breakfast, presentations, meetings, business lunch, presentations, meetings, business diner, back to hotel. And at the end of it all back to the airport and the flight home.
Been to the USA several times and all I've seen of it are offices and a hotel... :hmm:

GK Gang,

Had a medium to large gig tonight. Sound check went w/o incident. 3 songs in, this ungodly cracking and hissing is coming from the mains. I have my MB200 wired into the board with my 15" cab primarily as a monitor. The gain was just past 2, almost 3 o'clock.

Took it off of the direct, maybe increased the gain to just under 3/4. I hit a low B, or a mid E, the cab went buzz crazy. I had to turn down to 1 o'clock to get rid of it.

Amp or cab issue? I'm going to try it next practice with another cabinet, see what happens. I seem to be having issues with this head if I push it--over 2 o'clock on the dial.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
S33

Could be amp or cab; you can easily check if you hook up another cab to your amp (or vice versa) and carefully play through this setup.

In general, I would say that if you run the MB200 at 3 o'clock constantly, you might need a bigger amp.

+1. I have pretty much relegated my MB200 to a rehearsal/headphone amp. I know alot of guys use them to gig with, but I really think this little head excells on a small/acoustic type of gig for bass.. I have tried it with a very effecient 212/horn cab on a large gig ( 7 piece band ), and it just did not have enough oomph for me to drive the band. No harm, no foul, I did not buy it for that reason, but, I think some of you are expecting too much of this little head, imho.

For bar gigs and other smaller venue gigs, I run my MB 200 with an Art Tubepac pre-amp/compressor. The Tubepac adds a considerable amount of volume and punch.
I use the Tubepac because I like the tube grind and the compression. But it might be something to look into if you are determined to use the MB 200 for live performances and are short of volume.
I have a 212MBE cab under the set-up.

Can the Line Out be used to feed a poweramp?
I have a Crest ProLite 2.0 and the input sensitivity says ".770 volts +/- 3% for 1k 4 ohm rated power".
What is the volts output on the Line Out on the MB200? I don't see that information in the manual.

Not sure of the output voltage but I connected the line out of the MB200 to a Carvin HD1000 power amp once and it was sufficient to drive it. And I might add, it was bigger louder version of what the MB200 sounds like by itself. Tonally speaking, it sounded almost identical to my MB800.

I've been considering an MB200 for quite some time and finally took the plunge (got a great deal for a new unit at Musiciansfriend). Great GK rock tone in Contour mode, and for 200w wicked loud at 4 ohms through two cabs. Worth every penny.

Fer sure. If a mute switch were an option in place of that contour switch I'd prefer it myself.

Or an onboard compressor on bass heads in general. I don't think I've ever used a Contour control on any bass amp I've owned. Why did it become a mainstay on heads anyway ?
