GK MB 200: Part Two

Just wondering about experiences using a mb200 as a preamp into a power amp. I am currently using a Carvin hd1500 or QSC PLX2402.

Would I use the DI from the mb200 or the headphone/line out for best results?

I lined out (1/4" output) into my Carvin HD1000 and it worked fine, plenty of juice. And….it sounded pretty damn good.

Can anyone comment on the tonal differences between the MB200 and the MB500?

I asked this question once before in another thread, and the general conclusion was that the mb500 was just a louder version of the mb 200, as the mb800 was just a louder version of the mb500. Never played one, though.

I played an MB500 for a few weeks, and now have the MB200. Can't really tell you about much difference I noticed at all. I think the adjustable contour and presence of Gain and Master Vol makes for some difference, but hardly. Inherently there is really no difference at all. Run 'em flat, use the 4-band eq, same sound.

I've owned all 3 and they are way more similar than different to my ears. The mb500 does have a few more options such as a full contour rather than switch, but if I were going to decide between the two and portability was not a major concern I'd go for the mb500. I have much more often reached the vol limit of the mb200 vs the mb500. If you are going into a rehearsal studio and all they have is an 8 ohm cab you are only getting 140w from the mb200. I've been stuck in that situation many times.

Hmm, really? Rehearsal studio's that provide backline, usually provide amps with their cabs too.

headphone out

Where I live cabs are free and come with the price of the room. Amps have to be rented separately. Now there ARE some studios around here that provide amps as well, but I usually dont go to those ones.

Oh okay, then I'm confused. So about how many times has that happened to you then? I mean, if knowing they don't usually provide amps (only crapshoot cabs) where you usually go in your area, why didn't you take a cab so that didn't happen to you so many times?

EDIT: And besides, how much volume gain is there really - for example, between a 200W 4ohm 15" driver and a 200W 8ohm 15" driver (with everything else equal) when driven with a MB200 - honestly?
