GK or SWR half stack?

Lets make this simple.
I play metal and jazz.
I like a lot of power.
My budget is circa $700

I've read reviews on both and they both rock, but tell me what TalkBass thinks

Have have gear from both SWR and GK, both are great... for metal I would say GK. The gear leans toward more aggressive tones and you'll get more volume for the money.

Go for the GK. I got the GKBL210 combo amp and the BLX210 extension cab (for about 700 bucks too). It is loud and versatile, except it doesn't let you use the EQ on active basses though....

i'd probably say GK as well. probably a little more the tone you're going for, and plenty of power in that price range. there are more than a few 700s and 1001s in the classifieds right now.

could go either way, both offer some great options provided you stay away from their cheapest line of cabs, though I might add that a GK cab matched with a GK head can offer the advantage of Bi-amping.

Really? I have the head that goes in that and also use a REALLY active bass (as a matter of fact it was one of the reasons my last cab burned out) and I can dial in all sorts of tones on the fly with my bass controls.

Anyway, while I'm here GK. All I got to say.

i'm a little biased to GK myself. and as has been pointed out, there are some 700's and 1001's in the classifieds here. but there are also some for decent buy it now prices on ebay. throw in the 25% cashback deal from live.com and you're looking at a 1001 for about 350+. then get an avatar cab and you're good.

or if you go the combo route you have some great choices. you have the backline 2x10 and the 700 2x10... among others.

I would say SWR hands down. I don't know for $700 though. For ampos, super clean and sparkly for jazz, but plenty of upper mids in that aural enhancer for metal. For cabinets, no contest, SWR cabs are way better, IMO.

hmm Ive played a SWR and liked it allot, Neva played a GK but i would think theyre better. But i really dont know. Thats gona be a kick ass bass amp ryan

I've posted quite a bit on my experiences with the 700RBII and 1001RBII and often don't resist the temptation to put in a dig. I'm not a fan of the 700/1001RBII.
I'm not saying they're unrelaible - they're very reliable.
I don't much like the way they sound.

GK for heads is on my top short list.
SWR are tops in the cab department.
