Glasses..

Not entirely music direct, but both closeup and distance has deteriorated over the past year to the point where I absolutely need glasses at night to drive, and for close up work, reading, etc. I need glasses.

Poses a problem in stage, as I often times rely on charts and cheat sheets on an iPad to get me through tunes that are sprung on me on short notice.

Im sure there are others in this situation. What did you do?

What did you do?

i have readers of various strengths depending on the task at hand, e.g.,
- i have gig-glasses (for me: +1.50 or +1.75).
- +2.0 to +3.0 for different close up stuff...i have some +4.0 for real 'microscopic' stuff.
- +1.25 in the inserts of my driving glasses.

i spent my whole life as a 'myop' so having to use plus lenses for anything has been a real brain-teasing experience. but i'm glad i can see --- i'm reluctant to complain.

also: for everyday/usual, i've made a few pairs of bifocal readers. e.g., i get a cheap pair of +1.50 readers and add my own insert on the bottom of the lens:

if i hang my readers on my nose, like santa = my distance is fine with no correction, the intermediate (e.g., computer screen) is covered by the cheapies, and the added insert gets me some close-up vision.

Sounds like you need bifocals

how old are you? If in your 60’s could be developing cataracts

First thing on in the morning, last thing off at night. I've never played a gig without them.

If reading a specific distance is an issue, you can take that up with your optometrist. Charts are usually about arms distance away and you can get a specific prescription made for that distance. Many people who work with their hands and need glasses have a pair for that distance.

In just about every picture you see of me playing, I have my reading glasses hanging on my collar. Many players do. We were commenting on this in the favorite gig photos thread recently.

Go to an optometrist or opthamologist. Get a real solution from a real eye doctor. Any advice you get here on a bass website that isn’t “go to an eye doctor” is terrible advice.

Get a *good* pit light and attach it to your music stand. That is what I do. My eyesight still sucks, but the light source helps quite a bit. By the way, never used those crappy folding stands.

Ditto on the Bifocals... Spent the money to get prescription Bifocal glasses made with what would equate to low power readers at 1.25 for for far vision, 2.5 at close. One of my best decisions. No more headaches, and I don't have to squint to read TB posts.

The problem with bifocals is that for the close stuff you will have to tilt your head back or drop the chart low. There are also task glasses designed so that the main portion is for arms length viewing, the lower portion for closer and the upper for distance. There are a few variations on those as well for people that are in meetings most of the time and other scenarios. At least you don’t realize all of a sudden when you look down at a chart and realize you can’t tell if that’s an E or a D.

I just realized, since I now have a macular pucker in my left eye that makes me legally blind in that eye and unable to read with it, should I get a bifocal monocle for my right eye? That might be pretty cool.

I've worn glasses (nearsighted) since 1st grade. Last year I turned 50 and also got trifocals (?!!) - go to an eye doctor is definitely the best solution if you can afford it - hopefully your insurance will cover it?

Go to an optometrist. If you haven't seen anybody about your eyesight since your school days, it might be better to start by visiting an ophthalmologist, who can examine you for eye diseases, cataracts, and so on.

Those are your only two good options. Buying readers at the drug store isn't going to help if you have astigmatism or other vision aberrations, and they aren't going to help if you have actual health issues with your eyes.

Agreed. Your lookballs are way too important to relegate to the whims of broscience.

From a professional, Optometrist OD, or Ophthalmologist MD, first, then see an Optician for your specific eyewear needs. Multiple choices available once you have a valid Rx, as a starting point. DO NOT SKIMP ON the exam or your eyewear.

Go to a good eye doctor and tell her what's wrong and what you need to do. She'll tell you about the options. Modern bifocals and trifocals can have "progressive" lenses, which mean they don't have those ugly lines that make you look old.

Am I being daft….the solution is to wear glasses on stage. Or get Lasik as other have said. I wear progressives. Are you worried about how it will look? Not sure I understand the concern.

Seems like there should be professionals who solve people's vision problems so they don't have to ask random people on the internet. Oh yeah, there are.
