Wear glasses. Is that a real question? If you need glasses, wear glasses. I don't understand the problem or the question.
I don't know, I kind of get it, especially if you haven't worn prescription glasses before. Even as a life-long glasses-wearer, I hate going to get my eyes checked! But eventually I break down, the eye doctor must be horrified at how old and scratched my glasses are! But it feels so much better to get new ones! I can see again! lol
An ophthalmologist is pretty heavy-duty. Optometrists are fine for most of us who just need a little assistance with the fuzzies, rather than, say, surgery.
I only wear my glasses when I need to see..
i have readers of various strengths depending on the task at hand, e.g.,
- i have gig-glasses (for me: +1.50 or +1.75).
- +2.0 to +3.0 for different close up stuff...i have some +4.0 for real 'microscopic' stuff.
- +1.25 in the inserts of my driving glasses.

i spent my whole life as a 'myop' so having to use plus lenses for anything has been a real brain-teasing experience. but i'm glad i can see --- i'm reluctant to complain.
also: for everyday/usual, i've made a few pairs of bifocal readers. e.g., i get a cheap pair of +1.50 readers and add my own insert on the bottom of the lens:

if i hang my readers on my nose, like santa = my distance is fine with no correction, the intermediate (e.g., computer screen) is covered by the cheapies, and the added insert gets me some close-up vision.

Can n you wear contacts/ I had the same problem. My opthomologist hooked me up with Cooper Vision multi focal contacts. It’s a contact version of Lasix but with gradient rings to give you full 3D experience. It’s without a doubt the best thing since normal vision.
They have a simple test to make sure you can handle it. Some people can’t deal with the one eye corrected for near vision and the other for distance vision. But if you pass this test, and you can handle dealing with puting contacts in and taking them out of your eye (they will teach you how to do that), It will cure your problem. I’ve been wearing them since 2006 and they work great.

My insurance has the same copay for an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. I prefer the medical doctor. He checks my eyes for serious business and assuming everything is fine, based on further testing, he recommends whether or not to get a stronger prescription for my glasses. For me, I see no reason to go to a lesser trained option.
I started noticing I had difficulty reading when I was about 48. A visit to the optometrist confirmed that I needed reading glasses. 12 years later I'm still on the same prescription, my distance vision is good but working on computer screens all day has taken a toll on my near vision.
I recommend as other have here to make an appointment with a specialist, they can tell you exactly what you need.
I also use an iPad for charts and the glasses really help. If I know the songs I just put the glasses on the stand and play without them.

I found some shades (think Blues Brothers) that are bi-focal readers...I maintain my cool bassist image and know one knows I am sneaking peeks at my set list/charts
I wear multi-focals. They’re not like the old bi-focals but are graduated to give you a seamless variation of focus. They work well for me in pretty much every situation.

I still don’t understand the issue. The OP says he needs glasses for certain things, then asks what to do on stage because he can’t see. It’s like, my shoes protect my feet when I’m walking around the places I walk. Should I wear shoes when I’m walking somewhere else? What am I missing?
I’ll be 70 in a few months. I wear contact lenses, mono vision. My left is for reading, my right, for distance. I have been using this option for at least a decade and I never have a problem seeing the set list onstage in dim light, although the font size is usually 20-22 so it can sit on the floor near the high hat stand so I can see it. Regarding mono vision, the eyes/brain, adjusts to this pretty quickly.
