Bought my Godin LR Baggs Acoustibass new right around when they first came out. It’s seen a lot of playing time since then. Still going strong.

My Shifter Classic 4:

A097895F-2D3B-43A6-9091-C9F4870098A8.jpeg

A couple modifications:

1. EMG GZR PJ set plus an EMG 3-way tele-style switch so it’s all solderless. Stock pickups were not the best and the bridge pickup had problems, so I replaced it all with the EMG stuff. I lost the extra switch position that the stock setup with 4-way switch has (the choice between both pickups in series or parallel) but I don’t really miss that. The GZRs sounds so much better than the OEM pickups.

2. Hipshot lic. Ultralite tuners. Light basswood body + 4 inline headstock + heavy-ish tuners = bad balance. The Ultralites go a long way to remedying that problem. Tuner holes were just a hair smaller than 16mm which was needed for the 1/2” lic. Ultralites, so I had to open up the tuner holes just a bit. I made a bit of a mess of that trying to work too quickly but it’s no big deal.

I made sure they couldn't just drop a note and run. It was a boring morning but it's here! What a bass!

Pros:
  • Great hardware
  • Woods all look fantastic
  • Some flaming on the neck
  • Super comfy and flat neck, closer to my Spectra than my old Squier P V
  • The looks are incredible
Cons:
  • P pickup is too bright for my taste
  • J pickup is noisey all the time and I don't like it
Great bass, great deal. I'm very happy! And without further ado...

Very nice! The electronics are IMO the weak link on the Shifters. Perhaps the same can be said for the Freeways. It's not a terribly costly upgrade though, especially if you already know of other pickups that you for sure like. Experimenting gets a bit more costly.

I don't mind the P pickup, and I have no clue what I'd go for. lol

In a 4 that's easy, there's tons of great ones I can name off my head. But 5 string P pickups? I got nothing. Maybe some Aguilars into a John East Uni 3 knob?

I'm always late updating the list :P

I found a Shifter 5 3 pickup in the flame burst for $1000 CAD shipped. Which is a bit over twice what I paid for the Freeway 5. So was the Freeway just a ridiculous price and the Shifter is fair? Or is the Shifter overpriced?

It's in good shape but does have scratches in all the usual spots. It's clearly been played, not hard but lots.

Hello, can i join the Godin club? I'm new to Talkbass and i don't know how to join the clubs.

I've played bass for 12 years now. I have owned my fair share of bass through those years. My last bass was a Fender Jazzbass. I still have it somewhere ;)

I was looking for a change in sound. I talked to my guitarist friend who owns 2 Godin guitars, don't know the models. He told me to give a try at a Godin bass. So i went out to try one and compare with others bass brand. I fell in love with a Shifter classic four vintage burst. Being from Québec, I'm buying local i guess

My only regret yet is that when i replaced the original strings, i tried the DR black beauties. First and last time i buy these. I hate the rubbery feeling on my finger and i can even hear that rubbery feeling when i play in my headphone. I'll go back to my Ernie Ball Flatwound in a couple of weeks.

I'm not sure if i will keep the original pickup. Do you have suggestions?

Here's a picture of my love.

I have a Godin Passion RG 4 which is a similar bass. It came with Quarter Pounder pickups. This were good pickups but a bit scooped for my taste. I put EMG Geezers in and have been very happy with them. They sit so well in a band mix.
