My Shifter Classic 5 came today! Seems like UPS is not ringing doorbells anymore??? Went out front and it was sitting out way exposed for hours. Wow.
Anyway, here’s a pic! Will post more soon! (Desert Green/Tort looks gorgeous!! And I just say the bass feels and plays like it should cost at least 2x the price. B string is great. The 4 way switch is very cool. You get the neck, parallel, series and the bridge. There is a small amount of hum but it’s minimal and easily masked. Great bass!

Wow! That color is amazing! Congrats on that beauty!

...And, yeah, UPS, Fedex, USPS, and the rest don't ring my doorbell any longer, either. I have signed up for all their sites/services, though, so I at least get an email and text every time something is delivered.

I just realized I never posted about the mod I made on my BG4!

Last year, I’ve redone all the electronics. The version I have of the BG4 was the last one, with Godin electronics they were actually made by G&B (somewhat generic I believe). The challenge when upgrading was that the original pickups were wide, like 4 inch wide, more like 5 string bass pickups. I ended up with Lace Alumitone bassbars with passive electronics: humbucker/single independent switching for both pickups and a Fender TBX tone control. The result is great!

Thanks I’m really digging it!! It’s very even and the 4 different switch settings really give it a lot of versatility.
Do you know if Godin’s 5 string pups are standard 5j size?

Unfortunately, I don't. I had a 4-string Shifter, but those were standard size.

IMHO They’re not pushing this bass nearly enough for how great it is! Now don’t get me wrong, it’s no Sadowsky NYY, but it’s a very good bass and for 12 hundo I don’t think there’s anything out there that can touch it. Overall has a well built feel and a tight B. The back of the neck feels like nitro. Feels like about 9 lbs. haven’t weighed it yet.

Digging it! But atm I’m on tour with my Sadowsky. The Godin is definitely a killer bass though.

i’m curious if the shifter five has exact jazz bass pickup dimensions. I’ve had some instruments in the past that were slightly off (BB1200) making it more difficult to drop in a replacement pick up. I’m on the road so I don’t have this one in front of me right now, does anybody know if these are standard J bass pickup sizes ? Stock pickups sound great but curious what some SD singles would do to that bass!

I'm looking at getting a BG-5, mainly because of the 34" scale, the price and the good reviews.

I've found a couple that I'm interested in but they have different headstocks, leading me to believe they are different models or versions of the same model.

The first has this headstock and un-branded pickups.

The second has this headstock and EMG pickups.


Can anyone comment on the differences or which one to stay away from?

Also, what pickups are in the first one?

Any info would be appreciated.

I tried one of these last week (in this colour) and was mightily impressed! Felt rock solid and sounded great too.

I owned two different BGV/5's, and one had EMG pickups while the other had Seymour Duncans. The EMG's were hotter, and I ended up liking that sound more, for my application, but I generally thought the SD's had a better overall sound - they just weren't as hot, and for the music I was playing, I just needed the extra punch/cut/aggression from the EMG's.

It looked like this when I purchased it:

But...as is the case with most of my basses, I can't leave well enough alone...

I bought this bass in part because my GF's family name is "Godin", so I thought it would be cool to have a bass named after my biggest fan. I then decided to deck it out a bit in her favorite color/jewelry -- turquoise. Painted a replacement pickguard in turquoise paint, found some turquoise knobs online, and added some cheap turquoise jewels, plus a strap. I think it came out pretty good...

Took it to it's first gig recently - everyone (including my GF) loved it!
