I think the semi-acoustic Godin basses are great. I have an older one from the 90's with L.R. Baggs on the headstock. Pictured here with my Shifter 5 Classic.

Had the same LR Baggs fretless bass (but sunburst), it was nice.
Fun fact: the necks are interchangeable with Fender on these

I have the fretted version of the Godin Acoustibass. They are exceptional instruments. I wish I had sprung for the fretless version. They have a unique tone palate. The later A4’s and A5’s don’t have the sympathetic tines that give the bass a very full low end sound. There’s really nothing like them. Few people know just exceptional they are.

My recommendation is that you save your money and be on the lookout for one of the original Godin Acoustibasses
unless you want a 5 string or require a combo piezoelectric and magnet pickup system because of volume or styles of music. The Zyrocote fingerboard isn’t to my liking on the A4’s and 5’s and once they removed the metal tine harp from under the bridge it changed the sound. Just my take of course.

I know I like the more current A4s because I’ve played a few in stores. But I have never had the chance to try one of the older Acoustibasses. Hopefully I get the opportunity one of these days!

Late reply. My response would echo that of Ric Vice above. There is no open cavity with a large sound hole BUT I have not used it on a really loud stage.

I don’t think the A4 has been discontinued or changed. It’s still available for order at Long & McQuade for example (large music store chain in Canada) and a few stores have one in stock.

Maybe you could try asking around about placing an order?

Thanks. I see that some shops in Europe have it incoming in May. There are a few 5 strings left thou, but I prefer 4-strings.

Yes, I can place an order, but I would love to put my hands on it first to check if it fits my needs and ergonomy. It will be my first fretless so I don't want to rush anything.

By they way - what is Your opinion about the body shape - is it comfortable? I've heard that some folks complain about the edges of the body, and would prefer it to be slightly rounded. And what's are Your overall impressions when compared to the other fretless basses from similar price range? Is it versatile enough to be my only fretless?

Question for the Godin Club:
I have a 90es fretless Acoustibass. Great bass, wonderful sound.
The Baggs preamp is giving me trouble, though. I had played it in a while and now it hums, crackles or is just plain dead. I opened it up and saw corroded wires and wires that were disconnected.
Any advice? Shall I try to repair the preamp or replace it?
I looked at the Braggs Community site and read that there are not many options since this preamp has been discontinued.
Option 1: Bypass the preamp and connect the pickup directly to the output jack. Downside is, I would need an external preamp.
Option 2: Install a Baggs LB endpin preamp with a 9 volty battery and a volume wheel control. (ca.$80)
I really don't like either option. Has anyone run into the same problem and found a better way?

Update:
I bypassed the preamp and connected the pickup directly to the output jack.
As expected, there's a drop in volume but it's not dramatic. In fact, it's just as loud as my Danelectro Longhorn bass.
I would like to install a volume and tone pot. What would the wiring look like? Are thr pot values different for a piezo pu?
