Damn, one of the greatest has shifted planes. What beautiful music he left us with.
Compositional visionary giant . A real loss . Not to mention his great playing.

Ah F'&%, I can't even find words, but if Shorter's soprano sax is last thing I hear as I pass this life into the next it will be fine with me. The top of my list of the finest music in my lifetime, not just with Weather Report but with Joni too, one of the absolute giants in the musical world ever!

He was the only key Weather Report member (IMO - Joe, Jaco, Peter, and Wayne) I have never gotten the chance to see.

Yeah, Wayne was one of the best no doubt about it. I don't even know what to say, he lived his life to the fullest, created an enormous heritage for all to listen and study.

Finally saw him on his 80th birthday tour. I loved his answer when asked how he defined jazz. He responded "Jazz means I dare you!". A lot of what I read in interviews showed him to be even more zen in his comments than Miles, and that's saying something...
He's been ill for a while, I and I hope he passed peacefully. I can't tell you who my "favorite" musician is, but Wayne is among that group, and was a major inspiration during my trombone years. My wife is not a musician, but if she hears three or four of his notes, she'll almost always ask if it's Wayne Shorter. His sound, and his profound comprehension of time and musical possibilities, were incomparable.
I first heard the following album in 1978, and it instantaneously changed my musical direction in broad and manifold ways - please check it out, particularly "Lilia," at 32:21, which is one of the most profound and moving pieces - and performances - I've ever heard:

Thanks to Bob Parlocha for opening my ears to Mr Shorter. RIP both of those gentlemen.
Most all the major albums I love have Wayne on them. Aja and 8:30 are two of my favorites. All the Weather Report guys are gone now except Peter Erskine. "A Remark You Made" is etched into my soul. It saddens me that no one will ever hear these guys play that again. Bless you Wayne, time to go jam with your brothers.

A splendidly written tribute to a splendid musician.
Very sad. One of the jazz greats that inspired me when I took a jazz class at university.
