Godspeed Wayne Shorter

He's been ill for a while, I and I hope he passed peacefully. I can't tell you who my "favorite" musician is, but Wayne is among that group, and was a major inspiration during my trombone years. My wife is not a musician, but if she hears three or four of his notes, she'll almost always ask if it's Wayne Shorter. His sound, and his profound comprehension of time and musical possibilities, were incomparable.

I first heard the following album in 1978, and it instantaneously changed my musical direction in broad and manifold ways - please check it out, particularly "Lilia," at 32:21, which is one of the most profound and moving pieces - and performances - I've ever heard:



RIP, Wayne Shorter.

I love his take on Ponte de Areia from this album. I'll have to go back and check out "Lilia".

Most all the major albums I love have Wayne on them. Aja and 8:30 are two of my favorites. All the Weather Report guys are gone now except Peter Erskine. "A Remark You Made" is etched into my soul. It saddens me that no one will ever hear these guys play that again. Bless you Wayne, time to go jam with your brothers.

Me too! The first album - with Vitous and Airto - and Tale-Spinning, with Alphonso Johnson and Ndugu -- are my faves.

I saw Wayne Shorter play with Weather Report in the 70's and again with his own band in the last ? 5-6 years.

A real improvisor and thoughtful player.

The (Australian) ABC Radio website has an hour-long interview with Wayne recorded a few years ago on 'The Music Show'. For US or Euro TBers you may need a VPN to access it..

Watching him play though it looks like he struggles but amazingly if you just listen, he as smooth as can be!
