He's been ill for a while, I and I hope he passed peacefully. I can't tell you who my "favorite" musician is, but Wayne is among that group, and was a major inspiration during my trombone years. My wife is not a musician, but if she hears three or four of his notes, she'll almost always ask if it's Wayne Shorter. His sound, and his profound comprehension of time and musical possibilities, were incomparable.
I first heard the following album in 1978, and it instantaneously changed my musical direction in broad and manifold ways - please check it out, particularly "Lilia," at 32:21, which is one of the most profound and moving pieces - and performances - I've ever heard:
