Most all the major albums I love have Wayne on them. Aja and 8:30 are two of my favorites. All the Weather Report guys are gone now except Peter Erskine. "A Remark You Made" is etched into my soul. It saddens me that no one will ever hear these guys play that again. Bless you Wayne, time to go jam with your brothers.

I didn't really realize it until I was reading up on Weather Report this morning, and tho they had a few bassists, they had a lot of drummers and percussionists.

And I mean a lot.

You'll find a number of them are still with us, like Airto Moreira, Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, Alex Acuña... But yeah, none of them are as young as they used to be.

I think Tony Williams played on a tune too, though I don't now if he was ever invited to be in the band.

He's been ill for a while, I and I hope he passed peacefully. I can't tell you who my "favorite" musician is, but Wayne is among that group, and was a major inspiration during my trombone years. My wife is not a musician, but if she hears three or four of his notes, she'll almost always ask if it's Wayne Shorter. His sound, and his profound comprehension of time and musical possibilities, were incomparable.

I first heard the following album in 1978, and it instantaneously changed my musical direction in broad and manifold ways - please check it out, particularly "Lilia," at 32:21, which is one of the most profound and moving pieces - and performances - I've ever heard:



RIP, Wayne Shorter.

Yes! That and "From The Lonely Afternoon" (24:00) are both masterpieces. RIP indeed.
