I remember it being a big block. maybe more like a 400 , not a 396 I dont think.

This is a very good question.
The big-block Chevy series was the 396, 427 and 454.
The 400 Chevy was a stretched out small-block, which had siamesed cylinder walls, and was mainly offered as part of a towing package.
I could be wrong.
