I just remebered having played a sandberg with a similar grain (link) also sandblasted, and you right it is Ash.

This is my gold Low End Jazz bass...
gold frets, hardware, strings, and paint

It now wears a tortoise shell pick guard and standard black plastic jazz bass knobs... it was too gold, even for me!
